Author Archives: Steve Barnett. Larr; Older posts. User-Centered Design Process (again). August 22, 2016. Every now and then I go back to my scribbled picture of my UCD process and I think about wobbling it a bit. I spent some time looking at it recently. I added a bunch of stuff, I deleted a bunch of stuff, and I ended up with a slightly adjusted version. Here’s a quick list of why we need each step. Research: for gathering data on the problem. Personas: for clarity on who our users are. August 1, 2016.

Monthly Archives: August 2014. Larr; Older posts. More Opera Mini more of the time. August 28, 2014. About the Opera / Microsoft agreement. Last week (saying that Opera Mini will become the default browser on Nokia’s Asha and feature phone ranges), I felt like I wanted to say more about it. The article came back up on my radar a few days ago, courtesy of Jeremy Keith’s link log. Which reminded me of why it’s important:. 8221; talks about these stats in a wider context. Is so important: you’ll be bl...
The CSS bits of Progressive Enhancement | Naga
https://naga.co.za/2015/06/29/the-css-bits-of-progressive-enhancement
The CSS bits of Progressive Enhancement. June 29, 2015. At work the other day we were talking about Progressive Enhancement and feature phones, particularly in terms of CSS. The feature phones part of the chat led me to write up a short Dos and Don’ts of Feature phone design. Written for designers more than developers). The PE part of the chat made me scribble up the following pictures. Practically speaking, we chop things up a bit more than this, though. The basic CSS is loaded like this:. Since it̵...

Monthly Archives: September 2014. Launching the Contiki Agent Site Redesign. September 26, 2014. At last night’s UX Craft meetup. Carlo Kruger and Rich Archer from Unboxed Consulting. Gave a great talk about launching the Contiki. Agents site redesign on time and on budget. Here are my notes from their presentation. And that they could experiment easily. The design team were asking more questions and figuring things out at the prototype stage after spending a few days on it, rather than asking questi...
February | 2015 | Naga

Monthly Archives: February 2015. Plans, Details, Dates, and The Future. February 26, 2015. Plans should be more vague as they get farther into the future. The level of detail in them, and the dates attached to them. A good form of plan is a product roadmap. Even there, though, it can be tempting to go into deep detail and lock things into specific dates. There’s no reason to go into lots of detail about things far in the future. Those things will probably have changed by the time we get to them. Things o...

Monthly Archives: January 2015. Responsive Images in WordPress. January 22, 2015. Just released today is a new WordPress Plugin: RICG Responsive Images. I think this is the start of kind of a big deal. It works everywhere, automagically! See Tim Evko’s tweet. That is seriously amazing and a big deal. I know that some people aren’t very fond of WordPress. Static site generators are all the rage these days. WP is not as light as Jekyll. And it’s not as cool as Wintersmith. How I do things. 24th November 20...

Opera Mini, JavaScript, and mustard | Naga
https://naga.co.za/2015/06/18/opera-mini-javascript-and-mustard
Opera Mini, JavaScript, and mustard. June 18, 2015. The rather talented Alex Maughan. Was in our office the other day, and we got to chatting about Opera Mini and JavaScript (as FEDs in our situation are often want to do). Our chat got me thinking a bit. Is a strange little browser. There are Android, iOS, and Windows version, but the biggest market is the version that runs on low end feature phones. Opera claims that it “works on almost any phone”. And in my experience that’s certainly true. 99% of the ...
