Culinary Distractions: April 2013
http://culinarydistractions.blogspot.com/2013_04_01_archive.html
Entertaining perspectives on food and culture. Saturday, April 27, 2013. Plazas Past and Present. Templo de la Santa Cruz. Plazas are everywhere in El Centro Quer é. Taro and each one seems to take on a unique personality, based on its own inherent characteristics. Typically though, these gathering places are picturesque backdrops for an historic monument or a significant building. One of my favorite plazas is distinctly Quer é. The plaza is one of the oldest and most treasured in the city, since Quer é.

Entertaining perspectives on food and culture. Thursday, June 27, 2013. The Answer is: Millet. Hot on the heels of my sojourn out of the country for nearly three months, I’m back aboard the whole grain train again. With all the fried and rich spicy food that I devoured while in Mexico, it was time for some simple, unadulterated comfort food. And millet was my answer. I dozed off well into Mexican territory since it was difficult to detect much below, with only long sporadic stretches of darkness. Occasionally I’d snap to and peer out my window. A basket ...

Entertaining perspectives on food and culture. Monday, December 17, 2012. Of Markets and Mourning. Today I have been reading a paper left over from a recent food and culture class which analyzes the virtues and roadblocks facing farmers’ markets. According to "Culture and the Politics of Alternative Food Networks" [i]. Farmers' markets are social gathering places which offer a wide assortment of communal experiences. What do we do about the violence and death in our country. Does that make us any safer?
Culinary Distractions: Déjà vu: Tavern-style Pickled Eggs
http://culinarydistractions.blogspot.com/2013/11/deja-vu-tavern-style-pickled-eggs.html
Entertaining perspectives on food and culture. Sunday, November 24, 2013. Déjà vu: Tavern-style Pickled Eggs. This weekend I found an extra dozen eggs tucked way to the back of the fridge―something that is more likely to happen around Easter. At the time, I was thinking about the approaching holidays and the need to clear the clutter of forgotten leftovers and near empty containers taking up value real estate. In family days of yore their cool, spiciness made them a handy and satisfying snack. While the ...
