Culture Shock

Tuesday, October 25, 2016. Addendum: An Unexpected Trip. Since we moved to Croatia, many people have asked me what I miss most about the States. My response is #1: Family and friends, and #2: Baseball. Of course the former makes a lot of sense. The latter, on the other hand, in a culture where baseball is just in the movies, takes most off guard. I am arriving in Boston to enjoy the Cubs' first trip to the World Series in 71 years. Culture Shock: December 2013

http://cultureshock-jeremy.blogspot.com/2013_12_01_archive.html

Wednesday, December 4, 2013. When Culture Shock Sleeps in Your Bed. We almost forgot. The Jurassic age that had arrived last week had disappeared over the weekend. We no longer had any expectations on Monday morning. So when we came into the living room to get ready for pre-school we were surprised to find our prehistoric friends very comfortable. We were still in a daze so we didn't even think about how they might have made the popcorn. But it turns out food is a major part of their lives. At the risk o...

Culture Shock: The Good Life

http://cultureshock-jeremy.blogspot.com/2015/01/the-good-life.html

Wednesday, January 28, 2015. 8220;…Jesus withdrew from that place” (Matt 12:15). 8220;When Jesus heard what happened, he withdrew…” (Matt 14:13). 8220;Jesus then left them and went away.” (Matt 16:4). Isn’t it interesting that in Ephesians Paul cared more for the spiritual state of his friends than the circumstances they were enduring? As Keller notes, this is true of most of Paul’s prayers. As I consider the text, and the state of comfort I’m in now, I give thanks. Subscribe to: Post Comments (Atom).

Culture Shock: January 2014

Thursday, January 23, 2014. Renewal, Freedom and Fish. The fish my son received for his birthday is only free if it's in water, if it has food to eat, and if it eats the food it's given. "Greenlighty", the name our oldest son gave his new fish, died three days after it arrived to our house. Enoh wasn't devastated though. The fact that Greenlighty wasn't eating gave him a few days to prepare for his death. Our approximately 48 hours of renewal included a time of silent reflection and prayer. During th...

Culture Shock: Pushed to the Extreme

Monday, June 1, 2015. Pushed to the Extreme. 8220;One of the goals of Royal Rangers is to push you to your limit” our regional leader explained to us during a preparatory training session. “You never know how you’re going to react in extreme circumstances unless you’ve been pushed to your extreme ahead of time.”. Then came Sunday morning. The finish line was ahead of us. Our award ceremony/church service would conclude the weekend and I felt okay. But as I began watching the slideshow summary...I stood u...

http://lafemmet.blogspot.com/2011/02/pictures-from-novi-sad.html

Life in Serbia and the US, My ups and downs as an expat! Friday, February 4, 2011. Pictures from Novi Sad. I spent a week in Novi Sad with a friend and made a new one. I am working on a lengthy blog about the trip, but want to share a few pics and a bit of mirth before bombarding you with the extensive black and white script. This is, without a doubt, my favorite place in Serbia. If it is not for the glorious architecture, then for the company of such warm expat friends. I had been saying a very naughty.

Life in Serbia and the US, My ups and downs as an expat! Sunday, August 28, 2011. Post Irene post P.S. I stayed. I woke up this morning feeling refreshed but a bit too warm. We took the AC unit out last night so the "raging" wind and rain would and wouldn't get in through it. I think it would have been ok if we had left it in, but hindsight is 20/20. Delmarva Power truck out working on the lines. Thankfully we escaped most of the damage, trees seem to be the most dangerous culprits during this storm....

Life in Serbia and the US, My ups and downs as an expat! Friday, March 23, 2012. An American Hospital Stay. I have been meaning to write this for a while, but keep getting sidetracked with my new little bundle. The one that inspired the post and required a hospital stay. :). It is like a hotel in many ways, there is free wireless internet, Cable television, and room service was included! The food was quite good, I couldn't complain. Life in Serbia and the US, My ups and downs as an expat! Friday, November 23, 2012. I got an email the other day from a site. My blog is listed on. Expat Blog is a place I have gone to read others blogs. Something I recommend to expats and "wannabe" expats. Their experience are something to learn from, commiserate with, laugh at, and basically just enjoy. They wrote to say I was nominated for an award. Thrill, Shock, Smile! It's a treat to read reviews.
