Cumbria Way 2008: Day 5 - Great Langdale to Little Langdale

http://www.cumbriaway.blogspot.com/2008/11/day-4-great-langdale-to-little-langdale.html

Day 5 - Great Langdale to Little Langdale. 10 miles, 6 3/4 hours. We left our bed and breakfast about 10 o'clock and headed across the valley to rejoin the path. There was a great view back along the valley towards Bowfell and Crinkle Crags. The distinctive outlines of the Langdale Fells could be seen close by and were to remain a dominant feature for much of the day. From Oak Howe the walking was easy across low lying fields towards Chapel Stile and then woodland track to Elterwater village. We took the...

Cumbria Way 2008: Day 1 - Carlisle to Caldbeck

http://www.cumbriaway.blogspot.com/2008/11/day-1-carlisle-to-caldbeck.html

Day 1 - Carlisle to Caldbeck. 15 miles, 6 1/2 hours. As we had just finished Hadrian's Wall path we were starting the Cumbria Way from the north, the opposite direction to which most guidebooks describe the route. We had returned to Carlisle from the end of Hadrian's Wall and stayed in Langleigh House for a second night. We set out from here just after 9.00 am and headed into town to pick up a sandwich for our packed lunch. Dalston was a large village with a central square surrounded by red sandstone chu...

Cumbria Way 2008: Day 2 - Caldbeck to Keswick

http://www.cumbriaway.blogspot.com/2008/11/day-2-caldbeck-to-keswick.html

Day 2 - Caldbeck to Keswick. 18 miles, 7 3/4 hours. The forecast was predicting rain so we set off from Caldbeck debating whether to take the eastern high route over High Pike, or the lower level route to the west. We followed the path and road up to Nether Row where we had to decide. By the time we reached the farm at Nether Row the few patches of clear sky were quickly disappearing. We opted to take the lower route in the hope that by avoiding high ground we might avoid the worst of the rain also.

Northumberland Inn Way 2008: Day 6 - Cragside House and Gardens

http://northumberlandinnway.blogspot.com/2008/10/day-6-cragside-house-and-gardens.html

Northumberland Inn Way 2008. 94 Miles, 48 Pubs. Day 6 - Cragside House and Gardens. We decided to take another day off walking the route. We had originally thought we would visit Cragside House and Gardens in Rothbury at the end of the walk, but after realising it is closed on Mondays we had to change our plan. Cragside was originally built as a holiday home and later extended to become his main residence. It was the first house to be powered by electricity, generated using water power. After lunch we co...

The school children were sat out on the green for their lesson as we passed up the road. We followed the road along the pretty wooded Walden valley, gradually gaining height above the beck. We forded the stream of Fleemis Gill as it dropped into a little ravine. 18Thwaite Arms, Horsehouse. This road section continue...

Another bright sunny day as we set off from Reeth at 9:45am. We left the village passing by the church and headed through fields towards Grinton, following the route of the Coast to Coast path. We enjoyed our final views of the River Swale as we crossed the bridge into the village of Grinton. 14Bridge Inn, Grinton. As we left the moor behind we crossed...

Yorkshire Dales Inn Way 2008. 76 Miles, 26 Pubs. Day 6 - Kettlewell to Grassington. 135 miles, 7 3/4 hours (including pub visits). We left Kettlewell at 10:15 and headed out of the village climbing steeply up a track on to Conistone Moor. The path took on a more gradual ascent as it passed through a series of fields. This was a very quiet section, with only a few grazing sheep to be seen. We skirted above The Dib, a dry limestone valley which drops steeply down to Conistone. We followed Hebden Beck, flow...

Pembrokeshire Coast Path 2007. Day 4 - Trefin to St Davids. Saturday 7th July 2007. 15 miles, 8 hours. It was another bright sunny day, and with less distance to cover it meant that we could take our time and enjoy it to the full. We left our B&B at about 9.45 taking the footpath across the fields to rejoin the coast path at the lower end of Trefin. There were bright clear views back to the North. The path follows a well maintained track along the cliff top, passing Porth Egr and Traeth Llyfn. The Penlle...

Pembrokeshire Coast Path 2007. Day 12 - Bosherston to Penally. Sunday 15th July 2007. 16 miles, 9 hours (including visit to Manorbier Castle). We set off from Bosherston at about 9.30 and headed back down to the lily ponds. Crossing the bridge at the northern end enabled us to follow opposite side of the pool down to Broad Haven beach. We soon reached Barafundle bay which was another lovely sandy beach and was almost completely deserted. With our rucksacks on we left heavy footprints in the sand. As we a...

Pembrokeshire Coast Path 2007. Day 11 - Angle to Bosherston. Saturday 14th July 2007. 20 miles, 9 1/2 hours. It was a warm bright morning as we set off from the Old Point House pub at 9.30. As we headed away from Angle we had our last views of the industrial estuary of Milford Haven. Although it had been an interesting two days it was nice to be back to the coast and the sound of gulls and choughs once more. Across the estuary we could see Stack Rock fort and Dale just a short distance beyond. We reached...

Pembrokeshire Coast Path 2007. Day 1 - St Dogmaels to Newport. 16 miles, 9 hours. We were dropped off at 9.30 at the unmarked start beside the landing stage at the northern end of St Dogmaels village. After our obligatory photo at the start we set off in light drizzle for the first of our 186 miles to Amroth. The first section was an easy walk along the road following the Teifi estuary. Despite the mistiness there were good views across the river towards Poppit sands. The rough water around the entrance ...

Pembrokeshire Coast Path 2007. Day 3 - Goodwick to Trefin. Friday 6th July 2007. 195 miles, 10 1/2 hours. We woke to a bright sunny day which was encouraging for our long day ahead. It was 9.30 as we set off from Fern Villa Guest House along the road above Goodwick Quay to join the cliff top path. It wasn't long before we saw the Irish Ferry approaching. We had a wonderful clear view of Carnfathach ahead. The memorial stone at Carreg Goffa was erected to commemorate the last invasion of britian in 1797.

Pembrokeshire Coast Path 2007. Day 13 - Penally to Amroth. Monday 16th July 2007. 115 miles, 6 hours (including visit to Tudor Merchant House). It was a bright and sunny start to our last day as we set off just before 9.30. We rejoined the coast path at Proud Giltar. There were amazing clear views back to Lydstep Point and Haven. Caldey Island dominated the views as we approached Giltar point. The red flag was not flying so we were able to continue along the cliff through Penally firing range. The next s...
