Last night, for what seems like the billionth time but just may be fourth, Yancey. Tried to get me into Deadwood. HBO’s very own Manifest Destiny drama. Typically, if he tells me I’m going to dig a show, I do, if grudgingly. The Wire. Is the classic example — and thank our lucky stars that it’s been renewed for the fourth season, praise be. But although I admire the painstaking research that goes into Deadwood. Or Eastwood’s revisionist Unforgiven. May provides ample insight into the current mindframe do...

For My Uncle Al. My grandmother. Self-taught, she went to school only till her early teens herself but read everything under the sun and did crosswords every day of her life. She and Al got into science fiction, and that was the only real connection I ever formed with the both of them. I’d read their old paperbacks when I’d go over to Grammie’s, and eventually they got me my own subscription to Isaac Asimov Magazine. But I can write this, for better or for worse. So here’s to you, Big Al. Gentle, so ...

Sox and the Shitty: Why Desperate Housewives. And The L Word. Can't Fill Sex and the City. Sunday night TV has got me wishing I were a dyke again. People used to mock me for loving Sex and the City. The girls of SATC. None of what I’m writing here so far is original, and that’s the point. For the first time, a TV show captured not just un- Cathy. Reflected that. It also reflected a way to be feminine, sexual, witty, and still very, very genuine. Candy that we could digest. Equation for success is apparen...

Boys in the Ladies' Room ( Alice Doesn't Live Here Anymore. Apologies to those who’ve been checking La Broad View and have found naught these last few weeks. I’ve been suffering from my half-Jew seasonal flu, which is to say that my hatred of the holidaze, not to mention year-end lists save my baby’s. Always seems to work its way into my immune system. Omshanti’d, I’m sure. So as I’ve been lying about basking in a radioactive glow, I’ve been thinking some more about Vera Drake. Keeps showing up on the WE...

About Olympic-level quadriplegic rugby players both on- and off-court, screens to much ballyhoo on Ebertfest’s second day, and deservedly so. As Ebert says in the post-movie discussion, it’s a complete film that’s at once a backstage story, a reconciliation story, a rehab story, and a competition story about the US team's rivalry with the Canadian team coach, former teammate and notorious hardass Joe Soares. At the question-and-answer period following the screening, Zupan and Joe join the filmmakers and ...

Cupcake: Because you've had enough chick lit, and it's time for dessert.

From 2003-2005, Cupcake presented readings by some of New York's best women writers. This blog offered our take on the literary world, writers we love, and the evils of chick lit. Hmmmmm: very interesting: What Sandra Tsing Loh says. About working at NPR:. That was just a toxic, fear-based culture.". 1 Sandra Tsing Loh is way funnier than almost anything on NPR. 2 She got fired from KCRW in LA because an engineer forgot to bleep an obscenity from her essay as she instructed him to. The cover has remained...

Tuesday, February 07, 2012. The Alchemy of E-Books. Thankfully, it all fell into place as if the morning’s turmoil had never happened…. We are nearly at the point of going live with 28 e-books through Faber Factory, powered by Constellation, a digital platform developed by our American distributors, Consortium Book Sales in Minneapolis. It has been an exciting process, and my eyes are now agog at the advantages of e-books - for students, and anyone with a curious mind. So, The Alchemy of Paint. In Chapte...

More In The Monitor: February 2005
http://moreinthemonitor.blogspot.com/2005_02_01_archive.html
More In The Monitor. This is what happened at various shows around New York City. We swear. Sunday, February 27, 2005. Pixeltan / Rothko / Feb. 25, 2005. Right before I headed downtown on Friday, I finished writing a piece about Shonen Knife for Willamette Week. So I was thinking a lot about American indie rock’s fascination with Asian femininity. That, coupled with Ann’s reading, put me in ultra girl police mode. Is she making a statement about how Asian women are treated like caged animals? Posted by a...
