Currently Kimberlee: February 2011

http://currentlykimberlee.blogspot.com/2011_02_01_archive.html

My own random thoughts about current issues I find interesting or amusing. Monday, February 28, 2011. In our journalism class the past few weeks, we've had presentations from various health professionals on how they want journalists should report on things like suicide, viruses and pandemics and evidence-based health studies. I've enjoyed each presentation because I've learned about who I can contact and partner with to gain good information for health stories. I don't think I'm one who thrives on hard, ...

My own random thoughts about current issues I find interesting or amusing. Monday, April 4, 2011. The transition: School blog to professional blog. This is it. My last blog post as a journalism student. But I'll try not to make it my last blog post ever. I've resented blogging since the beginning (as you can see from my earlier posts), but in the past few months, I've learned why it comes in handy - especially having a focused blog. So I can't promise I'll update it weekly, but when I encounter new exper...

My own random thoughts about current issues I find interesting or amusing. Tuesday, February 23, 2010. Figure skating delivers this Olympics. Figure skating enthusiasts have nothing to complain about this Olympics. Tight competition, broken records, history-making performances, a heartbreaking passing, and commentator drama have made for many news stories in the past week. But let's start from the beginning. Pairs short program and free skate:. Image from zimbio.com. Mens short program and free skate:.

My own random thoughts about current issues I find interesting or amusing. Tuesday, October 26, 2010. This week in our editing class, we're talking about headline writing. The few times I've tried to write a good one. I've failed miserably and I've concluded that it takes a lot of talent to write a headline that both encompasses the entire article and is catchy. I started thinking about misleading headlines when I came across this one from the Globe and Mail this morning. But I know for sure, without tha...

My own random thoughts about current issues I find interesting or amusing. Wednesday, January 26, 2011. Coming around to social media. So I'm still not convinced social media will save the news. I fear social media is dumbing down the news into bite-sized fragments so people will know the headlines, but nothing of substance. She makes some good points and I strongly recommend a view for any journalists pondering the value of social media in journalism and how they can start to use it. And I learned a ton.

Melyssa's Chalk: My Pet Peeves

http://melyssaschalk.blogspot.com/2010/03/my-pet-peeves.html

Tuesday, March 23, 2010. A quick list of my top pet peeves:. Not using a turning signal. I'll punch you. Expressing an opinion as your own that EVERYONE else has. Don't tell me that you think war is bad and the world would be better without it. Everyone thinks that. Andrew Kress and Jessica Cable. That's all for now! What are your pet peeves? Maybe more people would use their turning signals if they were like this. March 23, 2010 at 9:52 PM. All I saw was my name and I was like SWEET! Follow me on Twitter.

Melyssa's Chalk: February 2010

http://melyssaschalk.blogspot.com/2010_02_01_archive.html

Tuesday, February 9, 2010. This ain't no game! So in our P.R. class today, my fantastic CreComm class had a conversation about advertisement placement. We touched on advertising in sports. I'm aware that sports, particularly professional, would pretty much not exist if it wasn't for the money they get from advertising, but I can't help but ask where you draw the line. All I ask is that please, please don't put ads on the bases. Cleats and dirt only! Can you guess the name of my team? I miss them. I t...

The oldest women in Arviat selling handmade dolls to the troops. At the 60th parallel. 2 PPCLI travelling from Churchill to Nunalla, Man. Subscribe to: Posts (Atom). Monday, January 31, 2011. Now, tell me your secrets. Many CreComms will remember the first-semester journalism class in which we watched a clip of Peter Mansbridge interviewing Diana Krall. We all took notes on what we thought were the strengths of the interview. Many of us noted Mansbridge's softball questions and his smooth transition between topics. Steve assured the class that we would get there and that good interviews come with time and experience. Jian Ghomeshi is a pro. Subscribe to: Posts (Atom).

Sunday, May 30, 2010. Eradicating incorrect punctuation, spelling mistakes and flawed grammar one sign at a time. When I spot a grammar or spelling error in my own work, I fix it. When I spot a grammar or spelling error in other people’s work, I use it as a "what not to do" learning experience. Some people, however, feel the need to stamp out all grammar, spelling and punctuation. Errors made by others. The vigilante's target: a 70-year-old hand-painted sign in a Grand Canyon watchtower. The two were also.

Melyssa's Chalk: January 2010

http://melyssaschalk.blogspot.com/2010_01_01_archive.html

Friday, January 29, 2010. I want one.but don't tell anyone! So there's this new invention of Apple. Maybe you've heard about it. It's called an iPad. Insert giggles and jokes about iTampon. A combination of a smartphone. My current job uses a touchscreen program and I love it (I know, I'm easily amused. I just realized how creepy this all seems.). Don't get me wrong, it's not the only thing that I like about it. It might be what I like the most, but it's not the only thing. Hard as I try to protect them ...

Melyssa's Chalk: Creative Writing: Video Games

http://melyssaschalk.blogspot.com/2010/04/creative-writing-video-games.html

Wednesday, April 14, 2010. Creative Writing: Video Games. What an opportune time to write about video games after we had to make our own! You really need to pay attention to what you're writing as you go along. I have a new apreciation for video games and the people that make them. No wonder they take soooo long and some of them can be quite expensive. I'd charge people a lot of money if I had a career building these comlpex storylines, and I only had one straight storyline! Sunday, September 27, 2009. For a week I wanted to be a veteranarian. For most of grade one, I wanted to be a ballerina. For most of my middle school years, I wanted to be an animator. Now, let's assume this does not work out (heaven forbid! Here is a list of my back up career choices:. 1 Esthetician: I love painting my nails! 2 Pastry Chef: More of a pastry decorator than anything. I love being really creative with things like cakes, cupcakes and cookies. There are endless possibilities! Well we had our...

Friday, April 15, 2011. Birthday at Swink Style Bar and the Grill on Broadway. After we left Swink, we went straight to the Grill on Broadway for a delicious dinner. We decided to sit at the counter so we could see the chef in action. He was entertainment just in himself. He put on a show for us that had my mom in tears from laughing. Not only did he love his job, he made us completely in awe of his cooking skills. Social Media used for good NOT evil. What to tweet about:. What events you're going to.

With my parents and brother! Tuesday, December 18, 2012. The French, they're just like us! Opinions and old enough to be bold. Enough to fight for those opinions. At dinner tonight, my host sister and host dad augured over what I believe was how expensive it is to live in Paris (oh be nice! Monday, December 17, 2012.
