National Capital Rock: The devil you know
http://natcaprock.blogspot.com/2010/05/devil-you-know.html
Thursday, May 13, 2010. The devil you know. The Devil Eyes following The Secret Loves with their ultrafuzzy, freaked-out blues rock. Their set got off to a bit of a bumpy start when Matt broke a guitar string straight out of the gate - then again when I saw them in July 2008 at the Bytown Tavern stuff was breaking right and left too. They covered Johnny Kidd's Please Don't Touch. This time around too. Matt puts the guitar on, strums strings, breaks one, takes guitar off . You can also follow me on Twitter.

National Capital Rock: July 2014
http://natcaprock.blogspot.com/2014_07_01_archive.html
Monday, July 28, 2014. Solo, with company. On Friday I went off to Pressed to catch some indie-rocking and singer-songwriting acts. The occasion was the release of Jon Hynes' new CD, Watchful Creatures. Another Jon, Jonathan Pearce of Winchester Warm, started things off with some stuff from his regular band, performed solo style. Here he is, conveniently backlit by the street light outside. The man in full, plus lighting. Pat and Sarah . Army of Saint Joan. Saturday, July 26, 2014. Verse The Sun was the ...

National Capital Rock: Teachable moments
http://natcaprock.blogspot.com/2015/07/teachable-moments.html
Monday, July 27, 2015. Amanda Panda on drums! Robby Bobby on bass. Fun fact: Adrian is, in fact, a teacher.). Adrian heads outside to check out his wireless! All that running about, a man has to take the weight off. Moving right along, we have the human musicians of Human Music, Jory, Mef and Cole. The band works out of Winnipeg and essays the sort of pop I can see emerging on Twisted Nun. Jory rocks the Fender VI. Singalong action with Mef! Mef gets in some bass time. Backup action with Mef and Jory!

http://natcaprock.blogspot.com/2015_04_01_archive.html
Thursday, April 30, 2015. Bearshark has had a haircut since I saw them at the Dom opening for White Mystery. Incidentally, they'll be back at Targ on May 21.). Keturah Johnson of the Heavy Medicine Band also showed up to sing a bit. Well, you get the idea! That was wild and gone. Monday, April 27, 2015. Show me the money. Alex takes a turn on the keys. A bit of preset noodling. Frontman Garrett Johnson has a revolving cast of musicians to help him out. Nonsensical shutter speed action! Last Friday I head...

National Capital Rock: August 2015
http://natcaprock.blogspot.com/2015_08_01_archive.html
Sunday, August 30, 2015. I skipped Friday night's Albert Island shenanigans, but was front and centre for Saturday; my sister's family was visiting from out west and they're big Austra fans so naturally we all went off together to check out that show, along with a side helping of other greatness, starting with Ottawa Pipahauntas (a.k.a. Sam from Organ Eyes, though I've seen a lot more of her solo stuff of late). The warehouse is a very nice space. Adrian works the steel. The view from the right. She was ...

Anastasia Chipelski on Danelectro bass and checks. Jen Alexander on non-pink guitar. Pardon my English - I've been living in a van.". They're hotfooting it back to their homebase of Winnipeg - tonight they play "some place in North Bay.". Show reminder: The Pocket Trio. The Living Sound System. Play The New Bayou; Invasions.

National Capital Rock: December 2014
http://natcaprock.blogspot.com/2014_12_01_archive.html
Wednesday, December 31, 2014. First up, In Heat, which have undergone a lineup change since I saw them in 2012 at Cafe DeKcuf. Tim Anderson now sits behind the drums, and Lexxi SplitLip rocks the microphone. They sound a bit more 1970s New York hard rock than they did before as a result. Angel handles the low end. More guitar with Tony! Adam Melnick handles the low end. Pete Hall mans the traps. Aaron works the steel! Ian consults his notes. Ian frets, Camm feeds back. A hairy and heavy evening. Rhythm s...

National Capital Rock: Problem child
http://natcaprock.blogspot.com/2015/08/problem-child.html
Saturday, August 01, 2015. Gripping action with Pascal! Percussive action with Jeff! Old Haunt - in this case represented by main man Lucas Huang - has a new EP coming out on Monday, dubbed Refuge. Containing songs like Get Back Satan. That deal with Lucas's "complicated" relationship with religion. It's got a folk, ambient and gospel feel to it ( you can download it free online. Next up, the stripiest band in the land, Guelph's Gregory Pepper and His Problems. Pepper's latest album Chorus! The Wig (Alla...

Monday, June 29, 2015. The whole sun-dappled lot! That's Kyle, Joey and Ryan from left to right. Kyle rocks the Ric. Joey rocks Burton Cummings' haircut and mustache (from about 1971)! That ol' ball and chain action! On to Terrible Liars! They're now the only band Davey Quesnelle is in, shockingly enough. Reflective action with Brendan! Stringed action with Brendan and Johnny! Davey works the tongue! Here's Alex Hamlyn, making his first appearance. Penny works the keys. Extra Alex and Penny! My actual go...
