Nature's Blog: Dead Stick Walking
http://naturesblog.blogspot.com/2015/08/dead-stick-walking.html
A log of natural events, natural history and nature-based philosophy. Monday, August 10, 2015. Yesterday afternoon, my wife spotted a walking stick on the ceiling of our back porch, a special treat for our two grandsons. Not always so easy to find (due to their excellent camouflage) stick insects are primarily nocturnal and are best observed at dawn or dusk. Sunset, Pacific Coast. The Freedom of Naturalism. Four months into their journey up the Missouri River, the Lewis and Clark party found themselves at the mouth of the White River, in southern South Dakota. From there, the Missouri would lead them NNW to Fort Mandan, their wintering site in west-central North Dakota. Sunset, Pacific Coast. The Freedom of Naturalism. Headwaters of the Colorado. http://naturesblog.blogspot.com/2015/08/up-river-with-lewis-clark.html
A log of natural events, natural history and nature-based philosophy. Sunday, August 2, 2015. Up River with Lewis and Clark. Having lived within the Missouri River watershed for much of my life (along the Colorado Front Range and in Columbia, Missouri), I decided it was time to read The Journals of Lewis and Clark. Not interested in wading through the official volumes, I chose the version edited by Bernard DeVoto, first published in 1953. Sunset, Pacific Coast. The Freedom of Naturalism. Skink in a Basket.

http://naturesblog.blogspot.com/2015/07/north-through-appalachia.html
A log of natural events, natural history and nature-based philosophy. Saturday, July 25, 2015. Further north, after we crossed the Muskingum and Tuscarawa Rivers, the Plateau has a more open feel. Here the Pleistocene Glaciers eroded the landscape, diminishing the relief between the ridges and valleys. Inclined toward broad vistas, I find this area more appealing. Sunset, Pacific Coast. A log of natural events, natural history and nature-based philosophy. Saturday, August 1, 2015. Having bred on the Arctic tundra or across the Northern Plains, shorebirds funnel south in summer, passing through the American Heartland from July through early November; for many species, August is the peak of their migration to southern beaches. A log of natural events, natural history and nature-based philosophy. Saturday, August 8, 2015. Skink in a Basket. Moving a basket of seashells yesterday morning, I was startled when a five-lined skink. Scurried out and disappeared beneath the deck. Its bright blue tail indicated that it was a juvenile, likely scouring the basket for insects. Sunset, Pacific Coast. The Freedom of Naturalism. Headwaters of the Colorado. New Colorado Wind Farms.
