cycle scribbles

Thursday, 20 January 2011. If only we had known, we could have come straight to this junk shop in Istanbul and picked up these snow globes as proof of our travels and forgone the 7000km ride! After six months traveling (five on the bikes) and before that a year and a half in Scotland it felt in good time to return home to Melbourne. It felt like we had reached the point where it was hard to take too much more in and we were looking forward to having a base to start our own projects and work from. No one ...

cycle scribbles: August 2010

http://cyclescribbles.blogspot.com/2010_08_01_archive.html

Wednesday, 25 August 2010. Labyrinth of Buda Castle. I loved the way the museum pulled you in by making the displays often quite cryptic, making you work to find the connections between things. Fossil of a laptop. Fossil of a giant coke bottle. Tuesday, 24 August 2010. McLeods Daughters in Hungarian. We were looking forward to tv after a few months camping and this is the best we could do. And ear rings made from bike chain links! Chain link earrings with spoke clasps. We also stumbled on a tiny vinyl st...

cycle scribbles: June 2010

http://cyclescribbles.blogspot.com/2010_06_01_archive.html

Sunday, 27 June 2010. For the first month or so of our trip we had cheap sleeping mats. They looked the same as the fancy dearer models but punctured quickly (we are unsure whether Jennys ever retained air! And were not very comfy. After many a poor night's sleep we splashed out on the well reputed Therma-rest brand and haven't looked back. A bit of a plug there but the difference is obvious and it's really not worth trying to skimp when it comes to getting a good sleep. Le camping sauvage (wild camping).

cycle scribbles: July 2010

http://cyclescribbles.blogspot.com/2010_07_01_archive.html

Thursday, 29 July 2010. A beer called "Radler" (cyclist) (actually, it's a shandy) and some mini golf (I lost rather appallingly). Matthew hoeing into a big German currywurst and pomme frites, me eating a spaghetti icecream (! Icecream squeezed to look like spaghetti strands, with berry sauce for bolognese sauce. a strangely popular style of icecream around here). Cheating by getting the ferry for 6km down a beautiful stretch of the Danube between Kelheim and Weltenburg. Thursday, 22 July 2010. The frien...

cycle scribbles: November 2010

http://cyclescribbles.blogspot.com/2010_11_01_archive.html

Sunday, 28 November 2010. After a relaxing three nights in Veliko Tarnovo, we boarded the night train to Istanbul, and spent the night pretending to be on the Orient Express. Saturday, 27 November 2010. Thursday, 25 November 2010. Rila Monastery was founded in honour of Saint Ivan of Rila, the patron saint of Bulgaria. In English he is usually called Saint John because apparently Ivan is the Bulgarian version of the name John (! Kari climbing out of Saint Ivan's cave (sin free! Spot the monk on a mobile!

cycle scribbles: gear

http://cyclescribbles.blogspot.com/p/gear.html

We thought it might be useful to make a list of the things we are taking on our cycle tour in case any pending cycle tourists are interested. We looked at other cycling blogs quite a bit as we planned and found them really useful (see our links. They listed things we didn't know of and suggested cheaper or free versions for things that we assumed we needed. Most updated how useful and resilient they found different gear on the road as they went. For stuff we bought online we have including shipping costs.

Liz Colin VW Transporter = Awesome. Now that’s more like it. Reading: The Hound of the Baskervilles. Reading: Bicycle Diaries by David Byrne. It might seem slightly daunting to have to cook our meals for the next 4 months on a simple two-burner gas cooker inside our van, but in fact we’ve been doing just that for the last 2 years living here in Amsterdam. Holland is not known as one of the great European food cities, and for good reason. The national staples – croquetten. Leave a Reply Cancel reply.

The Cycle

Thursday, November 30, 2017. Every once in a great while, the Mechanical Gods cut a big slice out of the humble pie, glop some hubris on top, and force-feed it to me. Here's a prime example:. Ugh Just looking at that photo again makes me throw up in my mouth a little. What you are seeing is one end of a no-longer-produced-and-increasingly-rare/somewhat-coveted Salsa Bell Lap handlebar. I picked it up as part of a long-forgotten Craigslist bike purchase (seeing a trend from my last post? Links to this post.
