About - Cycling East

http://www.cycling-east.com/about

My name is Alex and this is a blog about a bicycle ride. In March 2013 I flew from my home in London to Istanbul to begin cycling east across Asia. I raised money for Future for Nepal. A small charity who operate across Nepal to help impoverished children get a quality education. All donations go straight towards not only ensuring chosen children get a good education but also providing a safe environment for them to grow up in. You can read more about Future for Nepal in this post. What I Like Doing Best.

I am free but I am a prisoner - Cycling East

http://www.cycling-east.com/blog/i-am-free-but-i-am-a-prisoner

I am free but I am a prisoner. On January 14, 2014. Let’s try that again shall we? Sorry for everyone who read the first version of this post, slow internet caused half of it to go missing in the wires. Hopefully this one arrives with you all in one piece. Enjoy. All those months ago when I was making preparations to leave Alastair Humphreys. Sent me his mappazine “There Are Other Rivers”. Moving south I’m told that my chosen road is snowbound and there’s no way through. But it was Christ...Locals know b...

Journey's End - Cycling East

http://www.cycling-east.com/blog/journeys-end

On June 11, 2014. A man stopped me to ask where I was going. “Bangkok! Ooo very far from here. Maybe err. eighty kilo. I don’t think you can go on bicycle.”. At 30km the tail back begins and I begin to weave the bike, chasing gaps, breaking sharply, making a nuisance of myself and feeling memories of busy London commutes return. My mind is occupied with “just getting it done” and as I inch closer to the final destination the significance of the last few kilometres fades. Bury my head in complex fiction.

With whatever I could fit on my bicycle. Daniel, a touring cyclist I met in Tashkent shoulders his bicycle across a turquoise river in Tajikistan. A blizzard catches me out in the Tian Shan mountains of north western China. Cycling a dirt road through the Fergana Mountains in Kyrgyzstan. A herder sheltering from the wind provides directions on the Kazakh steppe. A Turkish gent invites me for a game of backgammon in Ardahan, Eastern Turkey, and does not let me win. An invitation for tea, Iran. Sensing my ...

Skip to main content. Cycling Embassy of Great Britain. Making riding a bike as easy as riding a bike. Insert Loved One Here. Manifesto and Mission Statement. Cycling for the Rest of Us. Cycling should be the simplest, easiest and most convenient way to get around in most places in the UK, and yet the reality is that its not – the roads are busy, and feel unsafe or unpleasant to ride on, and what cycle paths there are seem to take the long way round, or run out just when you need them most.
