Generally, the climb's category is determined by considering the length and steepness, plus its position on the route. Velonews' Tour de France 101. Regardless of lore, categorization of...

Cycling Skills: Speed, Leg Speed, and "Spinning Out"
http://cyclingskills.blogspot.com/2009/05/speed-leg-speed-and-spinning-out.html
Info, how-tos and tips for new and developing bike racers. Speed, Leg Speed, and "Spinning Out". Cyclists sometimes refer to “spinning out” in a sprint or down a hill, meaning they feel they reached the maximum speed they could in the gears they have. The implication is that with a bigger gear they could have gone faster in the same scenario. However, fitness and skill development (or lack thereof) are the limiting factors long before gear selection. Thursday, May 14, 2009. Labels: facts and figures.
Cycling Skills: Putting on the Sunscreen
http://cyclingskills.blogspot.com/2011/07/putting-on-sunscreen.html
Info, how-tos and tips for new and developing bike racers. Putting on the Sunscreen. Let's face it, somehow bike racers have a skewed vision of vanity. When was the last time a cyclist showed you his "great" tan lines? If you know many bike racers, it probably hasn't been long at all. But we all know that too much sun isn't good for you. To help keep all the time in the sun in perspective, there's a great sunscreen info graphic on InformationIsBeautiful.net. Tuesday, July 12, 2011. Or post in the comments.

Info, how-tos and tips for new and developing bike racers. Standing Causes HR Increase. It's common to see riders standing when they are riding, whether it's going up a hill, accelerating, or stretching out. But if your goal is conserve as much energy as possible, it's also good to know to that your heart rate will usually increase when standing, even when putting out the same power. Bike Boy: Good News
http://boyonbike.blogspot.com/2012/11/good-news.html
Wednesday, November 28, 2012. The phrase "No news is good news" does not always ring true. For a year, I earnestly desired to know the truth behind my hip injury and learned nothing. I think I got the answer today. I thank you for your prayers. Thats great news that you finally found out what is going on. Hopefully you will be back to 110% and crushing souls on the bike again soon. Good luck. November 28, 2012 at 9:09 PM. November 28, 2012 at 9:30 PM. Subscribe to: Post Comments (Atom). Bike Boy: May 2012
http://boyonbike.blogspot.com/2012_05_01_archive.html
Tuesday, May 29, 2012. Shellfish and I never got along so well. In my early years I had a tendency to hork crab cakes. For that reason, we assumed I was allergic to shellfish; and so I abstained. For some reason, a reason I know not, shrimp is a shellfish. Over the course of my long withholding people told me of the excellent taste of shrimp. I believed them. Friday, May 25, 2012. Friday, May 11, 2012. I miss you, SoMo. A nostalgic post was inevitable. This year it's different. I'm laying on the floo...
Bike Boy: An Update on 2013
http://boyonbike.blogspot.com/2013/02/an-update-on-2013.html
Sunday, February 24, 2013. An Update on 2013. I suppose I'm not the best at self-disclosure, particularly regarding my hip. I'm often incredulous as to why so many people ask me how my hip feels. For some reason, I expect them to know my physical condition without being told. I don't self-disclose. My hope is that this blog post will partially remedy that issue. That's what I've learned. Thanks for reading all the way to the bottom of the page. Have a lovely day. February 27, 2013 at 8:47 AM. Hi, I'm Jam...
Bike Boy: June 2013
http://boyonbike.blogspot.com/2013_06_01_archive.html
Friday, June 28, 2013. Le Tour de France 2013: Predictions. What happens when an unstoppable force meets an immovable object? An explosion. The 2013 Tour de France pits Chris Froome and his fellow Sky People against some of the strongest teams the Tour has ever fielded. There ought to be fireworks, and not the pathetic little sparkler show we witnessed last year. Last year he finished 30. I picked Valverde to win the 2008 Tour and later vowed to never do that again. Last year, I picked him to finish 8.

This week I'm going to Michigan for my cousin's wedding. I was killing it in Fantasy cycling until Rodriguez took the red jersey. I still haven't learned my lesson about not picking him. The podcast is on hiatus. College has not been conducive to such things. Thanks for reading. I will try to post more. Dan (Good Rit...
Bike Boy: April 2012
http://boyonbike.blogspot.com/2012_04_01_archive.html
Saturday, April 14, 2012. 2012 Amstel Gold Race: Prediction. Okay, here's my thought. Gilbert will win Liege-Bastogne-Liege, but he's not quite there yet. It will be a super competitive finish with all the explosive riders, but I believe that Joaquin has the legs and an extremely strong team in Katusha. We'll have to see if this jinxes Rodriguez like it jinxed Cancellara and Pozzatto. Saturday, April 7, 2012. And most importantly, Tom Veelers will take 11th. Subscribe to: Posts (Atom). Info, how-tos and tips for new and developing bike racers. With little experience, kids new to riding with gears quickly figure out how to find "easier" and "harder" gears. Adults can easily select these, too, but describing "bigger" and "smaller" gears or "shift up" and "shift down" can be a bit of a confusing and contradictory process, no matter your age. So let's lay out the common terms used in describing the range of gears. Ie big ring or small ring). The number of teeth of the chainring and cog tha...
