The Cynical Librarian: March 2008
http://cynicallibrarian.blogspot.com/2008_03_01_archive.html
Thoughts and commentary on librarianship, academia, and the world of books and information. Wednesday, March 12, 2008. I did absolutely nothing.". I did absolutely nothing and it was everything I thought it possibly could be." This is one of the great lines from the classic film "Office Space". It sums up a great deal of philosophy concisely while at the same time opens many doors for further exploration. Thus it must command our attention, if only briefly. What is the significance of doing nothing?

Thoughts and commentary on librarianship, academia, and the world of books and information. Monday, June 30, 2008. Last week I had the opportunity to observe the presentations of several candidates that were being interviewed to fill the newly created position of Coordinate of the Writing and Learning Center. This proves beyond all doubt th...

Thoughts and commentary on librarianship, academia, and the world of books and information. Wednesday, August 26, 2009. A Return to School. As always, the first day back is a busy, but it is a busy that we do not mind as we librarians have returned to what we do best - helping others with their information and knowledge needs. It is far more preferable to being in committee meetings under the weight of university bureaucracy, perhaps one the last vestiges of feudalism in the known world. A Pillar of Iron.

Thoughts and commentary on librarianship, academia, and the world of books and information. Tuesday, January 27, 2009. The Road to Employment. My Director asked today, "Have you read any of the Chronicle? No, I say. "Well, you need to read this article. It's about why NOT to go to humanities grad school." Her exact words I can't recall, but you get the idea. So, off I go reading this article. (By the way, you can find it here. I got in another Ph.D. program, but with NO FUNDING! First, I got a whole ton ...

cynical lemming | Going with the herd, doubting every step of the way
Going with the herd, doubting every step of the way. July 27, 2016. August 20, 2016. Hello, my name is Joseph Day. . .is it weird to have a pen name and then immediately tell people your actual name? I don’t know. I don’t really care. I’m kind of a Douche. I suppose I should take this time to explain the somewhat contradictory moniker (see that? Douche. What other kind of person would. What do you mean ‘you guess! I said I wanted to write something amazing. I refuse to waste my life away in academia&...

Cynical Life Lessons
Quotes, life lessons. So that you don't become one of the stupid people. Thursday, December 16, 2010. How to handle getting old. Seriously. First you need to come to terms with the problem: an inevitable, irreversible state of decay. This is the first part of what will happen when you are dead and in your grave. It is a problem without a solution. Just accept that. You can slow things down, and talk yourself into being okay with it, but it does not matter, you are dying already. Remove all your inhibitio...

Makin' It | OR How I Survived Living in Los Angeles as a Newlywed
OR How I Survived Living in Los Angeles as a Newlywed. Dear Larissa, 27, From Larissa, 17. Me, Age 17. What follows is a letter I wrote to myself when I was 17 and instructed myself to open when I turned 27, which happened almost a week ago. When I read it for the first time, I laughed so hard I cried. This is a relatively unfiltered look into my brain when I was a very immature 17, although I truly believed I was wise beyond my years. Where are you in life right now? Are you married yet? This Thursday t...
