Atlantic Crossing - Dad's War

https://www.dadswar.com/atlantic-crossing

We had lots of time on our hands – I guess the convoy was dodging U boats – we seemed to go south until it got very hot (maybe around the Bahamas? And then turn north around Iceland and had to get out sweaters and greatcoats. We ended up entering the Irish Sea from the North. The ship was very crowded – no privacy at all. Then I had a brain wave! RQMS C. GORDON COLLETT. Service No. B32103. Royal Canadian Corps of Signals. 4th Canadian Armoured Division. Original Official Cease Fire Message.

Stanley Barracks - WWII

Stanley Barracks & Barriefield. Stanley Barracks & Barriefield. After several months of working at Signals Armouries (with the extra privileges accorded to a Sergeant) it was quite a change (or maybe I should call it a “shock”) to enter into Stanley Barracks. As a recruit, with a bunch of chaps who had never been in the army. The Officers Quarters is the only building of Stanley Barracks left standing today (photo James Marsh). Next morning, we were paraded for our inoculation shots. At that time, th...

Normandy WWII - Dads War

We had expected problems with the bombers and fighters of the Luftwaffe – but the Allied Air Force had established air superiority. We saw a few German planes in the air – but none could get in close enough to do us any harm. In next to no time, the Beachmasters boys had a bull dozer on the scene, yanked the jeep out of the water, pushed it to one side, and scraped a pile of sand and rocks into the shell hole. That crew was really well- organized. In time, we closed the gap at Falaise and trapped hundred...

Southern England - Dad's War

https://www.dadswar.com/southern-england

The result was not a bit of extra cash for our shoemaker – but a sentence of two years in a military prison. The billets we had at Haywards Heath had to be experienced to be believed. When we first drove into the property, I thought that someone had goofed! At the end of our first day in our new quarters, with all the rooms sorted and arranged, I was so tired I could have slept standing up! In the morning our room showed evidence of a lot of small four-footed visitors! One time we were to be honoured (?

Dads Walk of Faith

Dads Walk of Faith. Thursday, January 14, 2010. Glance Back, Gaze Forward. I didn't wake-up thinking "today is the day". It just happened naturally as Todd and I happened to be driving by. I also see dad in my brother and in my husband; A legacy he left behind. I reminded dad of all these things. I told him I had to say goodbye for now, but that he better be the first one to greet me when I get to heaven. besides God Himself, of course. Saturday, July 4, 2009. Life in the Canadian Armed Forces in WW2

Prologue – Life in the Canadian Armed Forces in WW2. Men waiting in a line for the possibility of a job during the Depression – 1930. For this, I received $10.00 a week. After six months, I was given a raise and was paid $45.00 a month. I gave half to my mother and used the balance for street car tickets, clothing, medical and dental expenses. Anything left over was mine to blow on entertainment. If I was careful, I could take a girl to the movies once a month. RQMS C. GORDON COLLETT. Web by Greg Collett.

Dad's Watch

Sunday, June 23, 2013. Well, this project went a little south on me. On the positive side, I saved a fine timepiece from the jaws of the scrap bin and I have a decent watch for casual wear. On the negative side, it really didn’t come out as well as it could have. The main problem, of course, was and still is the broken lug (See Blog Post From January 22. Links to this post.
