Sunday, November 30, 2008. Objects 101 - Uniformity. Some interesting comments to my last post have prompted my to expand more on what I believe is good OO. As an example of good OO let me reproduce the Smalltalk code example from my response to a comment by Paul Homer to my last post:. Ok lets try and express this in a more familiar OO language, Java:. What is bad about this? Like Paul Homer pointed out the instructions (if,. New Integer(3) .isLessThan(new Integer(4) .isTrue(new Block {. Why Bad OO Sucks.

Saturday, July 02, 2011. Building trust and unlocking the IT/ Business relationship - Show me the Working Software! Hoping to keep this one short. I've been reading a lot of Gerald Weinberg recently, and I must say that he as an exceptional way of cutting to the core. Computer programming as always been opaque. The people who pay for it, must trust to luck and throw their money into what must seem like a deep dark pit and hope that eventually they may get something back in return. Yes, but guess what?

Making programming pay: April 2013
http://pab-data.blogspot.com/2013_04_01_archive.html
Sunday, April 21, 2013. There is no such thing as society. Lets make lots of money! I want to blog about something that has been bothering me for a while. As members of a community what do we owe each other if anything? What should be the norms that govern our interactions in the "public square"? What is acceptable behaviour and what is taboo? And does government have a role? Are these young children being best served? To me this is a very simplistic argument, and one that chooses to ignore the lessons o...

Making programming pay: What Killed Smalltalk: Sometimes Balls can be Useful
http://pab-data.blogspot.com/2009/05/what-killed-smalltalk-sometimes-balls.html
Sunday, May 10, 2009. What Killed Smalltalk: Sometimes Balls can be Useful. Uncle Bob, has been his usual charismatic and entertaining self in his keynote speech. This year at Rails Conf. He presented a dire warning for the Ruby Community: "What Killed Smalltalk Could Kill Ruby, too". So what is this beast of death? Language with garbage collection that appeared in 1995, and was market mercilessly and given away for free. Post And Giles Bowkett. As for the other audience. The people that were actuall...

Making programming pay: Pull is the new Push
http://pab-data.blogspot.com/2010/05/pull-is-new-push.html
Monday, May 03, 2010. Pull is the new Push. Just finished watching the video of Kent Becks keynote speech. I'm a forty something, and I remember when none of this technology existed. I remember when it all was a promise. The microchip was going to change our lives for the better, by giving us all lots of leisure time to spend as we like. Well it didn't quite work out that way did it? Is this a trade that anyone really wants? The whole drive for being "Lean" and efficient leaves me a bit could. We see...

Making programming pay: January 2009
http://pab-data.blogspot.com/2009_01_01_archive.html
Friday, January 02, 2009. If you read something new that is contrary to your current understanding you are faced with several possibilities:. The new idea stems from a new context which you haven't experienced. In this new context the old idea that you are familiar with no longer applies. The new idea hasn't been rigorously tested, hence the need to seek corroborating testimonies. The new idea has been corroborated, but the corroborators are involved in a conspiracy of lies in an attempt to deceive.

Sunday, December 16, 2012. The Newtown School Massacre - Why? What makes a young man feel so disconnected from others that walking into a school and killing a whole bunch of infants becomes a legitimate form of self expression? Every time I hear of yet anther massacre like this in the US, I think back to my time living in Atlanta and the loneliness and disconnectedness I felt whilst living in the centre of a beautiful and vibrant city. During my time in Atlanta I spent time in both institutions, the Stri...
