The Royal Oak Appleby | Walking the Dales Highway

https://daleshighway.wordpress.com/2010/06/24/the-royal-oak-appleby

Walking the Dales Highway. June 16th – 26th 2010. The Royal Oak Appleby June 24, 2010. 8212; helenjbillingham @ 8:45 pm. It’s an expensive one – 95 for a standard room – so expectations were high. And the Royal Oak Appleby. Doesn’t disappoint. It is too far out of town, I didn’t check that. But the room is very big, with a huge bed, a lovely bathroom, ipod docking station, and patio doors onto a semi-private garden. We then shared a chorizo, sauted potato and apple salad, that was also really tasty.

Walking the Dales Highway. June 16th – 26th 2010. June 23, 2010. 8212; helenjbillingham @ 7:27 pm. Sedbergh is a small town, I expected more somehow. But we had picked the best place in town to stay the night. The Dalesman Inn. Is classy. The room was gorgeous – the nicest so far. Huge with beams, a sofa and a really nice bathroom. The toiletries were supplied by the Sedbergh Toiletry Company. 8211; and smell heavenly. A perfect 26 hours – Day 7 Ribbleshead to Sedbergh. June 22, 2010. June 21, 2010.

A perfect 26 hours – Day 7 Ribbleshead to Sedbergh | Walking the Dales Highway

https://daleshighway.wordpress.com/2010/06/22/a-perfect-26-hours

Walking the Dales Highway. June 16th – 26th 2010. A perfect 26 hours – Day 7 Ribbleshead to Sedbergh June 22, 2010. Filed under: The walking. 8212; helenjbillingham @ 7:03 pm. I’d like to say this was my favourite day, but you would all get bored by that. Instead, I’m going for my favourite 26 hrs in time. Good food followed by an exceptional hot chocolate and Cointreau and a surprisingly comfortable nights sleep on the water bed. As we got closer to Sedbergh, the sun got stronger and warmer. Wildlife hi...

https://daleshighway.wordpress.com/2010/06/24/really-relaxed-ramble-day-9-ravenstonedale-to-appleby

Walking the Dales Highway. June 16th – 26th 2010. Really relaxed ramble – Day 9 Ravenstonedale to Appleby June 24, 2010. Filed under: The walking. 8212; helenjbillingham @ 6:33 pm. OK so it was 15 miles, not counting the trek up to the station to see the steam train, and the long walk to the hotel. But it was a lovely, gentle, walk through English countryside today. A perfect end to a fabulous journey. We had great views of Tornando flight practice as they skirted the hills and valleys. So today, as we r...

Food with Gusto | Walking the Dales Highway

https://daleshighway.wordpress.com/2010/06/20/food-with-gusto

Walking the Dales Highway. June 16th – 26th 2010. Food with Gusto June 20, 2010. 8212; helenjbillingham @ 7:59 pm. Front of house, is a lovely friendly chap, who clearly likes his food and beer. Suavely dressed in shorts and scruffy t-shirt, he was absolutely brilliant. A fan of Moretti lager, as is Neil, he had sourced a portable miniature cooler, and had the stuff on draft. 2 Responses to “Food with Gusto”. June 23, 2010 at 9:23 pm. You’ll never grow up to be a small girl. July 8, 2010 at 8:03 pm.

Glasgow to Edinburgh: Day Four (Linlithgow to Uphall – 9 miles) | Long Distance Walking

https://longdistancewalking.wordpress.com/2014/12/29/glasgow-to-edinburgh-day-four-linlithgow-to-uphall-9-miles

Joined up walking, from Inverness to Lands End. Glasgow to Edinburgh: Day Four (Linlithgow to Uphall – 9 miles). December 29, 2014. January 3, 2015. Of Glasgow to Edinburgh Canal Walk: total 60 miles. So, why the day off? Linlithgow is lovely. The evening before, we had a wander. Ten pubs in town – we only did three, but that cold and crispy early evening walk down the high street made us review our plans for tomorrow. The Loch, the Palace, Beercraigs Park. All vied for attention. Hills turned out to be ...

Joined up walking, from Inverness to Lands End. Glasgow to Edinburgh: Day Three (Falkirk to Linlithgow – 12 miles). December 28, 2014. January 3, 2015. Of Glasgow to Edinburgh Canal Walk: total 60 miles. A glorious day today. Frosty and blue skies all the way. Lots of variety and beautiful views. May get horribly busy, but at 10am we virtually had it to ourselves. The bright blue skies made for an excited photographer! To stay and eat. A modern, warm pub with good rooms. We ate here too and it was pe...

Joined up walking, from Inverness to Lands End. Glasgow to Edinburgh: Day Five (Uphall to Edinburgh – 15 miles). December 31, 2014. January 3, 2015. Of Glasgow to Edinburgh Canal Walk: total 60 miles. So it’s the last day and still the sun is shining. We have been extraordinarily lucky with the weather this week. Today is milder too and the canal has thawed. The birds are out on a feeding frenzy. Disconcerting and dizzy making. The last six miles are mainly through residential areas and the towpath becom...

Partly Pennine 2 | Long Distance Walking

https://longdistancewalking.wordpress.com/2015/05/25/partly-pennine-2

Joined up walking, from Inverness to Lands End. May 25, 2015. June 21, 2015. We had four days spare, but with travelling just two for walking. So they had to be big days. Day One: Horton in Ribblesdale to Hubbleholme. 13 miles. The weather was a bit rubbish. Dull and grey with a cold wind. But mostly the wind was behind us and at the end, when you really need it, the sun came out to warm our bones. This slideshow requires JavaScript. Day Two: Hubberholme to West Witton. 14 miles. And tagged Penine way.

Day Six: Drumnadrochit to Inverness – 19 miles | Walking the Great Glen Way

Walking the Great Glen Way. Fort William to Inverness. April 11, 2012. Day Six: Drumnadrochit to Inverness – 19 miles. It’s the last day into Inverness and by far the most challenging. After making it to the castle your feet, legs and brain know you’ve walked 79 miles. It’s a good feeling, full of achievement and memories, topped with the knowledge that you don’t have to do it tomorrow! Last view of Loch Ness. The first half of the climb is the steepest, but also the prettiest following a windy path thro...

Fiddlers Drumnadrochit | Walking the Great Glen Way

https://thegreatglenway.wordpress.com/2012/04/09/fiddlers-drumnadrochit

Walking the Great Glen Way. Fort William to Inverness. April 9, 2012. Drumnadrochit is a very long town, so do your research and pick your accommodation well. When you first come off the hills you reach the town of Lewiston, which merges imperceptibly into Drumnadrochit. The Loch Ness Inn. Seduced by their eccentric website and the promise of a 600 choice whisky bar. And it ticks most of the boxes. A spacious, cosy room for two. That said, unusually my research missed a trick. The Benleva Hotel. You are ...

Lang Dearg Studios & Glenmoriston Arms | Walking the Great Glen Way

https://thegreatglenway.wordpress.com/2012/04/08/lang-dearg-studios-glenmorriston-arms

Walking the Great Glen Way. Fort William to Inverness. April 8, 2012. Lang Dearg Studios and Glenmoriston Arms. Is virtually the first building you come to as you tumble off the hill. Most comfortable bed award. As we reached the town early, we treated ourselves to lunch at Glen Rowan Restaurant. 8216;Restaurant’ may be a little too grand a description, but it is a mighty fine cafe, that served up a first class bowl of tomato soup and a very welcome bottle of Heather Ale to wash it down with. Prize is an...

Kings Street Apartment & Fabulous Steak – Inverness | Walking the Great Glen Way

https://thegreatglenway.wordpress.com/2012/04/10/kings-street-apartment-fabulous-steak-inverness

Walking the Great Glen Way. Fort William to Inverness. April 10, 2012. Kings Street Apartment and Fabulous Steak – Inverness. As far as I can tell, the accommodation in Inverness is a little overpriced. Standard hotels, guest houses and B&Bs at boutique prices. After 6 days and 78 miles, I don’t mind spoiling myself, but if I’m spending 90 plus I do expect to be spoilt! It took a lot of routing around before finding the King Street Apartment. Living area and sunny window. An 8oz rib-eye steak for 16....

A Dales High Way Backwards

A Dales High Way Backwards. The story of our walk from Appleby to Saltaire. Wednesday, 5 October 2011. So – this is it, the final leg of our Dales High Way Backwards and what a leg it has turned out to be. We’d been watching the weather forecast hoping to get a couple of clear days when last week’s heatwave was announced. It was a no-brainer - a quick rearrange of the diary, a couple of phone calls and we were off. Lovely, lovely shade. Even the cows couldn't summon up the energy to move out of the way.
