Four Days and Counting. Posted in A PhDing Mom. Raising a bilingual baby. Sleeping (and not sleeping). Marta and Nico get back on Thursday. In the time that they’ve been gone, I’ve had a lot of people ask me if I miss them. Some people just assume I miss them and say, “Man it must be hard.”. I notice some of it, of course. Posted in Child development. Sleeping (and not sleeping). Tricks of the Trade. Friends, I have no been without my family for almost two weeks. And, while I am really enjoying sleeping through the night and having lots of time to read and write, I miss them like the dickens. To get my Nico fix, I’ve taken to watching old videos of her. Recently I stumbled upon this one, which I can’t remember if I shared with you all or not (because we weren’t sleeping at all then). So here it is:. But rather an expressio...

When Things Don’t Go As Planned. Posted in Labor pains. I’ve been trying for a week to figure out how to write this post. At first, I was too scared and tired to write it. Then I was just tired. Now I’m just not sure how to explain what’s happened over the past week and what it means. So I’ll start at the beginning:. Well shit, I thought. Though I didn’t at that point realize how shitty it was going to get. But most of the time I am trying to be proactive. I read lots of forums about this, which were...

Author Archives: Sarah V. And I’ll never do it again! Posted in Labor pains. After Marta gave birth to Nico, I think I had a post up for you all in two days. This time around, when it was me doing the evacuate-baby-from-body work, it’s taken me close to two weeks. Apologies for the delay, but it was A LOT of work. And the recovery has been a little slower than I thought it would be. But for those of you who have been waiting, here’s how it all unfolded:. Here I am with Walkie the Walker:. By the time Van...

And, while I am really enjoying sleeping through the night and having lots of time to read and write, I miss them like the dickens. You know what I mean. The mothers who have no perspective. But rather an expression of my growing nostalgia for a time in which I didn’t sleep and was miserable (I know this is making no sense, but b...

Posted in A PhDing Mom. The Ticking is the Bomb. By Nick Flynn, a memoir about the months leading up to the birth of his first daughter, but also about torture, specifically Abu Ghraib. But I’m writing to you all now because there is a quote in Nick Flynn’s book that reminded me of something that happened the other day with Nico. In a section called “The Broken Bowl,” he writes:. The Child’s Conception of Time,. And here she is, in the airport before leaving. My Oblivious Little Milk Spiller. She sits on...

Castigada, or Time Out | This Queer Familia

Castigada, or Time Out. Posted in Child development. Raising a bilingual baby. We put Nico in “time out” for the first time last night. We’d threatened before, Do you want to be. We’d say in Spanish, which to me always sounds way more severe than time out (and in fact is*). And at first when we threatened, she laughed and said yes. I think because before whenever we asked if she wanted something that something was almost always pleasant:. Do you want some fruit after dinner? Do you want to read a book?

Death to the Singing Kitty. Posted in Lesbian in Lubbock. Our shot-gun lesbian marriage. The good, the bad and the ugly of parenting. My mom, bless her grandmothering soul, bought Nico a Kitty Cat keyboard that also sings children’s songs, all of which are retooled to be about cats (i.e., instead of “How Much is that Doggy in the Window,” it sings, “How Much is that Kitty in the Window,” and the Twelve Days of Christmas are suddenly all about cats).
