Freshly Ground: The Bottom Rung
http://freshly-ground.blogspot.com/2010/03/bottom-rung.html
Food and the other things in life that really matter. Tuesday, March 30, 2010. Long-time readers (if any of you are still coming back to check up on this most sporadic of blogs) might remember a year or more ago when I waxed lyrical about getting my lazy butt into action and writing something every day. All of this, of course, on the computer, or else I'd have needed several dozen of those lovely little notebooks to contain all those many many words. I said it, therefore I must do it. Prior to writing th...

Freshly Ground: September 2009
http://freshly-ground.blogspot.com/2009_09_01_archive.html
Food and the other things in life that really matter. Sunday, September 27, 2009. Just when I think that it's getting all summery, it turns cold again. Luckily, I've got a whole swag of warm winter stewy-type meals sitting here in the drafts folder waiting to tickle your saliva glands, but this one ought to go down just as well for those of you in the Northern Hemisphere who have started to feel autumn biting around your ankles. This recipe was inspired by my friend Jenni's trip to Rarotonga. 150g Mushro...

Freshly Ground: A New Yorker in New Zealand
http://freshly-ground.blogspot.com/2009/09/new-yorker-in-new-zealand.html
Food and the other things in life that really matter. Sunday, October 11, 2009. A New Yorker in New Zealand. I'm not a big desserts sort of a guy. You may have picked up on that from the scarcity of desserts gracing these pages. That and the fact that I refer to my lovely wife as Dessert Chef. It is Dessert Chef that does the desserts. That is just how it is. Until Dessert Chef got a book for her birthday. If there is a dessert that can get my mouth watering at the very thought, it is real cheesecake.

Freshly Ground: Cappuccino Cheesecake
http://freshly-ground.blogspot.com/2010/01/cappuccino-cheesecake.html
Food and the other things in life that really matter. Monday, January 18, 2010. I promised it, and here it is: Cheesecake. I took this recipe out of the same cheesecake recipe book as my first Cheesecake post. And I have to say it was just as good as that one. I modified the recipe slightly to use a brewed shot of espresso rather than instant coffee, but I'm a bit of a coffee snob like that. So without further ado, here it comes. Serves 1, unless anyone else hears that you've made it). Loosen from the ri...

Freshly Ground: August 2009
http://freshly-ground.blogspot.com/2009_08_01_archive.html
Food and the other things in life that really matter. Sunday, August 30, 2009. Polly Want a Cracker? You've all heard the rumours about wild big cats that roam the wilderness of places where there ought be none. Most famous are the tigers of Britain's moors (or some such), and in New Zealand we have our very own legendary panther that is reputed to stalk the highlands of the South Island. As you can see by this comparison with a tui on the same branch, it's not a small bird, and it must be pretty friendl...

Freshly Ground: October 2009
http://freshly-ground.blogspot.com/2009_10_01_archive.html
Food and the other things in life that really matter. Thursday, October 29, 2009. This blog might have left you with the impression that we eat ridiculously well every night (and most mornings, too). I can assure you, that is not really the case. It is certainly our intention, but we're just as hard-pressed for time, energy and budget as everyone else out there. Stuff, happens on the weekends. It's sort of like the magic of television, only it's the internet. Here we have really quick, simple pizza.

Freshly Ground: Breaking the Silence - Save the Hobbit
http://freshly-ground.blogspot.com/2010/10/breaking-silence-save-hobbit.html
Food and the other things in life that really matter. Thursday, October 21, 2010. Breaking the Silence - Save the Hobbit. As some of you may know, my day job is in New Zealand's film industry. It is a dynamic and exciting area to be working in, but the events of the past few weeks surrounding The Hobbit. Have brought the industry as a whole into great peril, and things could not be worse. These are the basic dynamics of this conflict:. Even if The Hobbit. From the cynical point of view of a film technici...
