Meditation Teaching | Dan Bartlett: full stack developer and product designer
http://danbartlett.co.uk/meditation-teacher-bath-bristol
My approach to teaching is based on the knowledge that awakening is a natural yet profound human phenomenon that anyone can experience with sufficient sincerity and desire, and that being open and honest about this transformation is profoundly empowering. A teacher can recognise this unfolding in others and provide guidance and pointers to facilitate the process. This process is an opening to freedom, joy, clarity and ultimate truth. Update, August 2015. You can find me on Twitter.
Web Development | Dan Bartlett: Meditation, mindfulness and awakening

I started programming when I was 15, after my family got its first PC – an old Compaq Presario. I quickly became fascinated with how it worked and totally absorbed in the Internet. After building some of my own basic websites and meeting some like-minded folk, I naturally found a home in the hacking subculture, which introduced me to Linux and open source software. The first ‘real’ language I coded in was Perl, which I enjoyed because I could write CGI. And HTML5. I still use PHP. There are no images on ...

Meditation — Dan Bartlett

I started meditating when I was 22, a couple of years after taking an interest in Taoism. Not long after beginning my practice I came across Daniel Ingram’s Mastering the Core Teachings of the Buddha. Daniel’s book is at the ever-evolving heart of the Pragmatic Dharma. Or at Kenneth Folk Dharma. I am sometimes available to teach meditation over Skype and email, or face to to face if you live in the Bristol/Bath area in England. For newcomers, I usually recommend Mindfulness in Plain English. By Ven. ...
Meditation on the Breath — Dan Bartlett
http://danbartlett.co.uk/2013/09/28/meditation-on-the-breath
Meditation on the Breath. Written by dan bartlett. In Sep 2013 meditation. A guide to following the breath. Focusing on the breath brings calm and stillness to our meditation, and prepares the mind for insight. By focusing on the breath, we give the mind something to fully apply itself to. With the mind focused and absorbed in the breath the debris settles, our clarity increases, and our experience becomes still. Clarity and stillness are the prime conditions for insight. How do we focus on the breath?

Mis-spent Youth | Villageblog

Where's the Village. Laquo; Whole Foods. I’m so right and you’re all wrong etc. April 6, 2010. I’ve been reading some of John Holt’s early. I realise that by saying this I’m probably insulting most of the people who are likely to read this (as well as myself) but really are we intellectuals as smart as we think we are? The people who fail to operate in the world of symbols from an early enough age tend to conclude (well, they get told) that they must be stupid and give up thinking altogether so it’...

Where's the Village. Laquo; More Alice Miller. January 13, 2006. NOTE: this was published in Uncensored Magazine. 8211; At least I’m told it was – I never saw the actual issue it was in (issue 4 I think). Disciplined Minds also deconstructs professional training by explaining that the main purpose of the training is to produce people that will take on their employer’s id...

Where's the Village. October 31, 2008. Added to this we have a copy of Nourishing Traditions. In the house now and Karen, who is a keen cook (just as well because I’m not) has been dipping into it on a daily basis. We’ve been eating broths and a variety of fermented foods, including a crazy relish thing I like, which seems to have two quite different tastes within it. We’ve also been eating sourdough bread regularly and using unprocessed sea salt and sugar substitute rapadura. Has to say about the issue*.
Socialisation | Villageblog

Where's the Village. October 24, 2008. I just wanted to pick up on the comments on Ran’s blog about schooling and socialisation because ever since we started telling people we were unschooling our children (often we just say homeschooling so as not to frighten them) the single most common objection we receive is;. 8220;But what about you’re child’s socialistion? After several irritating years of this it suddenly dawned on me that no one had ever said;. Also: Ran ended his piece with this comment;. 8230;i...
Suburbia DOA | Villageblog

Where's the Village. Laquo; We’ll all be driving one soon. Doom, Gloom and Ka-boom! May 17, 2008. I see a lot of people gleefully predicting the demise of suburbia – dependant as it is on the car for it’s full functioning, but I wonder where do we think all these people are going to go? Which is the effect of a lot of the doom – it reduces us to numb spectators. How often do doom-bloggers wonder aloud about why people don’t follow their advice, all the time unware that it’s the cons...And YES I realise t...
Unconditional Parenting DVD | Villageblog
https://villageblog.wordpress.com/2007/07/27/unconditional-parenting-dvd
Where's the Village. Hold on to Your Kids. July 27, 2007. We just got a copy of the Alfie Kohn DVD ‘ Unconditional Parenting. There’s a book by the same name but we got the DVD because we like the idea that we can easily hand it to other people and they won’t need to worry about wading through a heavy tome (I haven’t seen the actual book) and especially we can give it to people who are suspicious of our approach to parenting. Karen has given it a friend already. More importantly though he says that shift...

Where's the Village. Laquo; Still Going On About Parenting. A bit of own-trumpet blowing. November 9, 2010. I know I rarely post now but I just had to put up a note about a post I wrote over two years ago, Suburbia DOA. There’s been a bit of noise about Jeff Vail’s article Rescuing Suburbia. In which he says much the same things I said in the aforementioned posting (from two years ago, did I say that yet? Albeit with much more detail and a lot less ranting. My posting descended into a bitter rant about t...

Where's the Village. Laquo; Mis-spent Youth. I’m so right and you’re all wrong etc. April 27, 2010. I talked about John Holt in my last post and I’ve just been reading a couple of brilliant little books by him; How Children Fail. I was very surprised to be this gripped by a book again. It’s been 5 years since I last felt like this about a book (when I read my first anti-civ writing) and since then I’ve got so overloaded with. Then there was yesterday’s experience, after reading this Noam Chomsky article.

Where's the Village. Laquo; 1 gone, 1 back and 1 idle. October 3, 2008. One of Bill’s interviews compared permaculture thinking to the marital arts philosophy of Aikido in that it seeks to turn adversity into strength. I have to admit I don’t know much about Aikido that here’s Bill Mollison with just one of a million tales of ingenious inventiveness. That’s from a very long and inspiring interview at Seeds of Change. This next example is from another long interview at Mother Earth News. I tend to have th...
