180 | Quadrant Dan

https://danburf.wordpress.com/2015/06/22/180-2

This blog held me accountable in providing top notch lessons for my students each week (I dreaded the days where I had to write about using a Pizzazz or Kuta worksheet). I was also able to reflect each day on what went well or not so well, which, in my eyes is extremely important. Basically, I am trying to say I am happy with all the improvements I made throughout the year. But…I still want to be better. a lot better. Here is what the future holds Quadrant Dan and myself…. June 22, 2015. Looking forward ...

180 | Quadrant Dan

https://danburf.wordpress.com/2014/08/20/180

I am one week away from starting my second year of teaching and can’t wait. Last year I came across several 180 blogs and followed these teachers for a year, reading about and seeing incredible growth in their students and teaching. A voice in the back of my head has been working at me for the last few weeks and I want to give this post once a day for 180 days thing a try. Get plugged into the math blogosphere. Challenge myself to always be better. Provide resources for others. August 20, 2014.

Day 177: Skittles | Quadrant Dan

https://danburf.wordpress.com/2015/06/05/day-177-skittles

Last night I went and bought 8 pounds of Skittles; I had a fun conversation with the cashier. Algebra looked at the color distribution of the different sized bags of skittles and made some conclusions on the data. Here’s how things went. I threw up this picture and asked ’em how many Skittles thy thought were in the package, then their estimated percent breakdown of each color. After, I put this up and asked if it changed any if their answers. This entry was posted in 180. End of the year. June 5, 2015.

Day 179: A look back | Quadrant Dan

https://danburf.wordpress.com/2015/06/09/day-179-a-look-back

Day 179: A look back. Today, if you need something last minute, this is a fun way to spend a period (heads up, there are a few errors, it is fun getting students fired up about them though. I am keeping ’em for next year). Anyways, Back in August. I posted about this 180 day blog thing. I want to take a little time to re-visit the goals I put in place. Get plugged into the math blogosphere. Challenge myself to always be better. Provide resources for others. One more day…. June 9, 2015. Enter your comment...

A simple yet effective introduction to adding polynomials has brought me out of blogging hibernation. I feel like I should justify what I have been doing over the last… 7 months… but lets just say I have been busy in the classroom. Anyways; here are goods. Start off by asking students to evaluate the following:. Walk through it to make sure they totally understand, this should be easy peasy for them. Then throw this up:. This entry was posted in Uncategorized. April 11, 2016. This year I’m teaching:.

Three J's Learning: a physical feeling for densities

http://3jlearneng.blogspot.com/2015/07/a-physical-feeling-for-densities.html

Monday, July 27, 2015. A physical feeling for densities. Thanks to Mom, our stair number line recently got a (partial) refresh with some snazzy new number posters. This stimulated a new exploration by J1 to study how dense different groups of numbers are. Well, that wasn't how he phrased it . . . J1's dialogue as he played on the stairs:. Hmm, what if I walk up the multiples of 2? Walks up skipping stairs, no problem here. Oh, that's pretty easy, but J3 might find it tricky. 1, 4, what's next ? 16, oh no!

Three J's Learning: Equal? Ambiguous test questions

http://3jlearneng.blogspot.com/2015/08/equal-ambiguous-test-questions.html

Sunday, August 9, 2015. We have been looking at questions from a local exam contest. I thought two were worth discussing. Kaew had been in the mountains climbing for the last four days and recorded her distances on this graph (the first one below). The other graph shows the climbing distances from Ploy. Below the graphs are 4 statements by other people and we're asked how many of the statements are true. The statements are:. Weera claims: "Each day, Kaew climbed more than Ploy.". The math class answer.

Three J's Learning: July 2015

http://3jlearneng.blogspot.com/2015_07_01_archive.html

Wednesday, July 29, 2015. ABCs of logic puzzles. When: while on holiday from school. After a long gap, I had a chance to look at Tanya Khovanova's math blog. Again recently. She has a nice mix of questions/puzzles, some of which are beyond our kids right now while others are perfect. Yesterday, we talked about a pair of problems involving a trio of puzzling characters: Alice, Bob, and Carl. In the first puzzle. Puzzle. In particular:. There is some common information. Realizing that there are some number...

Three J's Learning: August 2015

http://3jlearneng.blogspot.com/2015_08_01_archive.html

Monday, August 17, 2015. Language games (first class). We had an opportunity to spend some time with the 2nd grade class today playing some language games. Not exactly a game, we got them started with a quiz on some frequently written words:. A, the, and, I, to, was, my, of, we, he, she. After the quiz, the kids took turns writing the words on the board and we talked about a couple of tricky points:. Sh" is another one that doesn't exist in Thai. Making words (PDQ variation). After going through all the ...

http://3jlearneng.blogspot.com/2015/08/variable-ladder-of-abstraction.html

Monday, August 3, 2015. Variable Ladder of abstraction (Programming classes). We started by discussing the homework from last time: drawing a 5 pointed star:. Friday, August 14, 2015. Math games class: 24 game and connect 4 dice. As a warm-up, the first grade played tic-tac-toe. This was to prepare them for the main game of they day: dice connect 4. Two players alternate occupying spaces on this grid:. Second and third grade. In both older grades, we played the 24 game. I saw this mentioned recently on Benjamin Leis's blog about his own math club (maybe just in passing here. I thought he had a more extensive post about the game elsewhere, too). If no one else ...

How do we play this game?

How do we play this game? Just a list of things that happens to me from day to day. June 4, 2013. Our family was recently fortunate enough to celebrate a remarkable milestone: my grandfather, Leo Burd, turned 100 years old. My grandfather has been old all of my life, so the milestone hasn’t exactly crept up on me. In fact, my cousins made up a game called, “Grandpa was old when.” The answers could include most events from the 20th century. My grandfather with his girlfriend of many years, Lucy. After goi...
