Dancing on Glass

Tuesday, 5 May 2015. March and April Reading ( the Clarke, the Baileys and Eduardo Galeano). There was lots of online coverage about the death of Günter Grass but much less about Eduardo Galeano. This is a great shame. Not only was he a great novelist but also a brilliant, outspoken critic against the wild excesses of capitalism and Western Imperialism. I urge everyone to read him. My first William Gibson EVER, hugely enjoyable. And thoughts from John Self here. An Artist of the Floating World. I also en...

Dancing on Glass: June 2014

http://www.dancingonglass11.blogspot.com/2014_06_01_archive.html

Tuesday, 3 June 2014. Most Hollywood comedies are crap so when Henry Barnes gave Bad Neighbours. 4 stars in the Guardian I went along. [sighs] I watched it all the way through and laughed a couple of times near the end when the two main characters have a fight - funny like The Three Stooges. But for the most part its fairly dull and embarrassing. Seth Rogen, Rose Byrne and Zac Efron just about keep you watching At least its not as offensive as many of them - Ted. On the other hand Blue Ruin. Jab We Met (...

Dancing on Glass: December 2014

Thursday, 18 December 2014. Films of the Year 2014: Part 2 - women. In comparison to 2013 it feels like a lean year for women in film. There are notable exceptions however – in Indian cinema especially, but I’ll cover that in a different post. Five women are central to three of the most significant films of the year. Marion Cotillard’s performance in Two Days, One Night. Was the best of the year. Melisa Sözen and Demet Akbag are fantastic in Winter Sleep. Of Pawel Pawlikowski’s Ida. And Kelly Reichardt (...

Dancing on Glass: January 2014

Friday, 31 January 2014. A good start to 2014 - 36 films, mostly good or great. Any favourites here? Anything you feel is completely overrated? 12 years a Slave. The Patience Stone (2013). The Wolf of Wall Street. La Dolce Vita (1960). A Short Film about Love (1988). A Short Film about Killing (1988). Like Someone in Love (2013). Little Miss Sunshine (2006). Visions of Light (1992). The Great Beauty (2013). I Am Love (2010). Marina Abramovic: The Artist is Present (2012). Side by Side (2013). It made me ...

Dancing on Glass: February 2014

http://www.dancingonglass11.blogspot.com/2014_02_01_archive.html

Wednesday, 26 February 2014. The Machine - James Smythe. Unbearably muggy and oppressive whilst the sense of threat on Beth’s estate adds to the claustrophobia. The narrator stays close to Beth throughout; the method allows Smythe to create another layer of tension because you are so close to Beth’s frustrations and anxieties, her headaches and her tiredness. Should have been on BFSA shortlist and I hope it makes the Clarke. Friday, 14 February 2014. In Autumn 2010 Tricia Sullivan noted. Is a brilliant s...

Dancing on Glass: February 2015

Friday, 27 February 2015. Harvest - Jim Crace. Was shortlisted for the Man Booker and won the James Tait Black Memorial Prize in 2013. I ended up enjoying it a great deal (as I did with so much of that year’s literary fiction). I’ve now read nearly all the books on that year’s shortlists – there were some cracking novels:. Kate Atkinson: Life After Life. AM Homes: May We Be Forgiven. Barbara Kingsolver: Flight Behaviour. Hilary Mantel: Bring Up the Bodies. Maria Semple: Where’d You Go, Bernadette. I incl...

Dancing On His Feet | Life is a Dance…Let God Take the Lead…

Dancing On His Feet. Life is a Dance…Let God Take the Lead…. July 5, 2011. I don’t know exactly how many times I’ve circulated through “My Utmost for His Highest”. Devotions, but I know I’ve been doing it for years. Chambers regularly sets a high bar for me spiritually. No matter how many times I’ve read a particular devotional thought, I’m challenged anew. There’s always something pertinent to my current “life” situation. Today was no different. Here’s a portion…. Our current series at church. Here are ...

Barbara Richard - contemporary western author

1953 - Mom, age 38. A page turner, a difficult and important story of survival in nearly unbelievable circumstances. The father emerges as the most heinous character in the history of western literature. I found [one scene] the most disturbing primary account I’ve ever read. Judy Blunt, author of Breaking Clean. WELCOME TO MY WRITING WORLD. Fortuitously, at about that same time, I received inspiration by learning that a woman I had known when she was in high school, Judy Blunt, had written a wonderful be...
