Dane in Ghana: On a Mission

http://www.daneinghana.blogspot.com/2007/08/on-mission.html

Tuesday, August 21, 2007. After a trip out to meet the District Director at the office where I will be working in Navrongo, I have come to Bolgatanga for a few days, while the director asks a family if they'd be willing to have me stay with them. With a full day in Bolgatanga to myself, I half-expected to sleep, read, and wander around town for a few hours. Sarah Lewis has other plans. I put off the mission until late in the afternoon, and then wandered around town for a while as I thought of a strategy&...

Dane in Ghana: October 2007

http://www.daneinghana.blogspot.com/2007_10_01_archive.html

Saturday, October 13, 2007. Anonymity has been hard to come by in Ghana. Whether it's the neighbours laughing when I try to wash my clothes, being stared at on the street, or having children yell "fella, fella, good morning! White man, white man, good morning! Whenever I bike by, it's hard to blend into the background. Novel at first, it can get tiring after a while; there are times when I just want to be ignored. When we got to Chuchuliga, the driver seemed happy to help out. After paying the fare, ...

Dane in Ghana: September 2007

http://www.daneinghana.blogspot.com/2007_09_01_archive.html

Wednesday, September 19, 2007. If there's one thing Ghana seems to love, it would have to be dams (.and football). Akosombo, the giant hydroelectric dam in the south, supplies the entire country with electricity, and restrains the world's largest artificial lake (Lake Volta). A new hydroelectric dam is being built, and will hopefully address the recent rolling blackouts. The flowing spillway might be evidence of a harsh rainy season, but it's good news for fishermen. Anyone can pay for a seasonal con...

Dane in Ghana: Arrival

http://www.daneinghana.blogspot.com/2007/08/arrival.html

Saturday, August 18, 2007. My plane touched down in Accra, the capital of Ghana, on Wednesday evening. My introduction to Ghana was the wave of humidity that hit me on walking out of the plane; after making my way through customs and out into the greeting area, the flurry of activity and voices were my introduction to Accra. Shawn, a fellow Engineers Without Borders Junior Fellow, met me coming off the plane. It was my first time seeing one of the other JF's. This year, I am the only JF. Every Junior Fel...

Going from Canada to Ghana: August 2007

http://canada2ghana.blogspot.com/2007_08_01_archive.html

Going from Canada to Ghana. Wednesday, August 29, 2007. On my second day at work, I showed up, was ushered onto the back of a motorbike and promptly sent off into the bush. Piloting the motorbike was Janet, a wonderfully kindhearted mother and extension agent/WIAD (Women In Agricultural Development) officer, and taking the lead in another motorbike was Zack, the district's extension officer. I was standing under a tree full of ripe mangoes! Was it that food from the morning? Was it the mango I ate? By th...

Going from Canada to Ghana: Savanishing

http://canada2ghana.blogspot.com/2007/07/savanashing.html

Going from Canada to Ghana. Wednesday, July 18, 2007. Their huge forms lumber in the dust, pacing idly. The ground murmurs and softly trembles beneath their incredible mass. Monoliths, they dominate the landscape. Suddenly excited and impatient, one pulls forward from the herd and bellows a shrill blast. Ears ringing, the ground seems to whimper in response. Growling like thunder, the bus begins to lumber through the station. The people really seem to rely on the seasonal rains. This is a major probl...

Going from Canada to Ghana. Monday, April 23, 2007. Who is this guy? I'm a 19 year old second year. Engineering student from the University of Waterloo, Ontario. I'll be spending a summer in Northern Ghana working with the Ghanaian Ministry of Food and Agriculture (MoFA), a volunteer placement which was organized through. Canada. This trip is a way for me to begin to understand why there seems to be so much. I think I have many preconceptions about what poverty is, and what it is not. For example,. To le...

Going from Canada to Ghana. Sunday, June 10, 2007. After getting his contact information from Gwen Henderson, an EWB Long Term Overseas Volunteer (LTOV) based in Tamale, I arranged a meeting with Francis Azamza. Nobody pounds like Amina pounds. A few of the children. Emmanuel hits the books. Michael explains how to brood a fowl. Friday, June 8, 2007. But funerals in Ghana are relatively complex and diverse ordeals, and are not always such a performance. Sometimes, the body may wait many weeks at a mo...

Dansker i New York. Fortsæt til primære indhold. Fortsæt til sekundære indhold. Travel to NY with baby. April 14, 2014.
