Overful: April 2007
http://overful.blogspot.com/2007_04_01_archive.html
Saturday, April 14, 2007. Thank Yous (and R.I.P.s). This post has finally been reconstituted after I mistakenly erased this blog and the name was taken over by spammers. The original date of publication was January 13th, 2006. I've made one change: I've reversed the order of Thank yous and RIPs because one friend, scanning too quickly, saw my face, read "RIP," and started to cry. The following must be thanked by name:. David Goorevitch and Annette Frymer (both of whom also nursed me back to health).

Overful: Ruth Kaplan at Ryerson Gallery: "Some Kind of Divine"
http://overful.blogspot.com/2010/05/ruth-kaplan-at-ryerson-gallery-some.html
Saturday, May 15, 2010. Ruth Kaplan at Ryerson Gallery: "Some Kind of Divine". 8220;Some Kind of Divine,” Ruth Kaplan’s new show of photographs (and a video) opened at Ryerson Gallery (80 Spadina) Thursday night, May 13th. Thirteen must be a lucky number. It was for me. I saw pieces that, in themselves, were as good as everything—not anything but everything—I’ve seen at CONTACT this month so far. There were several pieces of that quality. In fact there’s lots of soft grain that exactly matches the ...

Overful: May 2007
http://overful.blogspot.com/2007_05_01_archive.html
Sunday, May 13, 2007. Post-Modernism dines on La Traviata. It started at the Overture. A bunch of klieg lights on two floor-to-ceiling towers glared at the audience and between them a Victorian lady who seemed to double as death and who was cast, perplexingly, as Violetta’s maid! 8230; You can’t get good help anymore…” to mock the staging. Of course not, silly—post-modernism was designed to be sexless and sterile. Subscribe to: Posts (Atom). View my complete profile. Post-Modernism dines on La Traviata.

Overful: McLuhan's Animal Farm
http://overful.blogspot.com/2010/05/mcluhans-animal-house.html
Sunday, May 16, 2010. When you believe in things you don’t understand then you suffer. Superstition ain’t the way. At Ruth Kaplan’s show, “ Some Kind of Divine. 8221; I read the usual gallery blurb til I got to the word “McLuhanesque.” I walked away. Nothing in Kaplan’s work is McLuhanesque and I wondered aloud what McLuhanesque could possibly mean. McLuhan wasn’t a photographer. He was an academic. And where's the proof? The ability to conceive and imagine music? Where is the proof? And the train, plane...

Sunday, April 15, 2007. White puffs and blue above. Of wool, the colour. Is asphalt, reflecting. Green tinge. Night. Below me. A filigree. Of the wheels as they. Touch down. In bed. Comes rest. Within rest. Comes the sun, the son,. The young lover to his bride. With calves of iron joy. What is perfectly sure. Revives as it simplifies. In this wise what is right and pure. All that it commands. What is clean and true. Is what cuts what's wanted. From that which is possible;. A man's days are numbered,.

Overful: Edward Burtynsky at the Metivier Gallery; Art of War: Bullet Paintings by Viktor Mitic
http://overful.blogspot.com/2010/09/edward-burtynsky-at-metivier-gallery.html
Saturday, September 25, 2010. Edward Burtynsky at the Metivier Gallery; Art of War: Bullet Paintings by Viktor Mitic. Well, I saw two shows today, one bad, one good. How pointless. And the paintings! Hiroshige (or was it Hokusai? Copy it and shoot bullets into it? Well, they say beauty's skin deep and Mitic isn't that deep. Dorothy Parker once said of Katherine Hepburn that her performance ran the emotional gamut from A to B. Mitic doesn't make it to A. Subscribe to: Post Comments (Atom).

Overful: "The Rape of Africa" at MOCCA
http://overful.blogspot.com/2010/05/rape-of-africa-at-mocca.html
Sunday, May 9, 2010. The Rape of Africa" at MOCCA. The photo on the exterior wall at MOCCA seems to be a critique of The West. It isn’t. A critique is a subject closely studied: studied to a critical degree. “Critical” in the moral sense is more like judgment or denunciation. “Critical” in the academic sense is a degree, a measurement of rigor, honesty. 8221; I aked. The man’s jaws were clenching. “Who are YOU to challenge anything anybody says? But nothing can be right or wrong anymore. But I will say t...

There's a small Wikipedia entry here.

Sunday, April 8, 2007. My eye, sore. Soil, my air. Posted by Dan Goorevitch. Subscribe to: Post Comments (Atom). Index of first lines. There is no activity more noble, more vital, more necessary than wrestling with one's self. That is what poetry is for me. Like Jacob wrestling with himself, the prize is the blessing of life. Woman is the crown which makes man king. Please read my poem "Sheep Shearing." It's the key. View my complete profile.

Dan Goorevitch11 Eaton South: A Poem for Paul Smith
http://dangoorevitch-11es.blogspot.com/2008/02/poem-for-paul-smith.html
I was dialyzed between February 6, 2001 and November 3rd, 2005 at 11 Eaton South and other locations in the Toronto General Hospital before receiving a kidney transplant on my 54th birthday, November 5, 2005 in Fort Myers, Florida, the home of the delicious Mangrove Snapper. Sunday, February 3, 2008. A Poem for Paul Smith. Overhead the flickering bulb. Buzzes, pops and hisses;. Three petty tyrants,. What is this pressure. At the base of the ear? In the muddle—the middle. Of the stream, crossing. Subscrib...
