When Joy Met Pain On A Seattle Bound Train. Here’s one of them. I was on the train going from Vancouver to Seattle. Why I was visiting both Vancouver and Seattle were biggies in my trip. I’ll write about them another time. For now it’s the in-between bit I want to talk about. And she told me she’d been visiting her son. Oh! How nice, I said. There was a pause. He’s got cancer, she said. Pancreatic cancer. Another pause. It was very difficult leaving him. July 22, 2015 # Olga Kotelko. May 16, 2016. In pra...

Middot; On Ageing. BBC Radio interview on successful women in their 60s. A couple of Mondays ago, just as I was heading out for a photography trip, BBC Radio Bristol. Called; was I available to do an on-air interview, later that morning? Oh Not sure. Bit awkward, as I’m going to be on the road, I thought. The topic, explained the lovely producer, is ‘why are we surprised by women in their 60s enjoying success? Oh, well in that case, of course, I’d love to! Vernon Harwood’s show from Monday 11th May.

Break down or your alarm really. And when it c...

Making My Blood Boil: Greetings Cards on Ageing | ALEX ROTAS

Making My Blood Boil: Greetings Cards on Ageing. I’ve just realised how angry those greetings cards are making me: the ones that make a joke about getting older. Angry? My knee-jerk reaction is let’s campaign to ban these cards. Burn’em all! My more considered reaction is how can we make them no longer seem funny? And that means a longer campaign, one that would involve just talking more about older age, de-stigmatising it, reframing and disrupting the old stereotypes. Is even seen as the butt of jokes?

Middot; On Ageing. T-shirts & how 60 is the new 60. I was thinking about making some T-shirts with 60 is the new 30 written on the front. I’d seen Joe Johnston. The American pole-vaulter I met in Florida this January, looking very cool wearing one – particularly as he was an unlikely 70. (You can see him wearing it in this Growing Bolder video about him. I liked the idea of wearing one myself and I thought it would be fun to play with a design, get some made and put them on my site here. Let’s work on it!

International Veterans Football (that’s Masters Soccer to you, U.S.A). Are you a footie fan? To be honest, I wasn’t either. But then I heard about two international matches Wales. Vs England over 55s and over 60s and I couldn’t resist grabbing my camera and going along. The venue was Forest Green Football Club. But, but, but…it was fabulous. The team coaches and subs alongside the pitch made one mother of a noise! Or a coach might bellow Ref! The muddy slides and falls to the ground. A couple of time...
