Starting from scratch | Danielle Batist
https://daniellebatist.com/2013/04/03/starting-from-scratch
Journalist, inspired by changemakers. In their hundreds of thousands they crossed the border, arriving by boat, bus or on foot. After decades of civil war with the north, South Sudanese have come back home to witness the birth of their new nation. The fight for independence has come to an end, but for many returnees, the struggle is far from over. Sources: Inter Press Service. Cover story over seven pages in Swiss magazine Surprise, July 2011. The journey lasted for a month. The ship was crowded and ...
The birth of South Sudan | Danielle Batist
https://daniellebatist.com/2013/04/09/south-sudan-the-birth-of-a-nation
Journalist, inspired by changemakers. The birth of South Sudan. It is not often that you get the chance to witness the birth of a nation. In June 2011, I got that chance in South Sudan. Together with photographer Simon Murphy, I visited returnee camps, remote villages and a leprosy colony. I spoke to landmine victims, single teenage mums-to-be and journalists fighting for media freedom. The stories I wrote during my travels were circulated through the INSP News Service. Also featured some of my work.

Journalist, inspired by changemakers. The power of India’s disabled work force. In a booming economy that is crying out for skilled workers, India’s corporates take baby steps in including disadvantaged groups. With a potential work force of 30 million people with disabilities, the challenge is to match up talent and jobs and fight stigma in the process. Bangalore, January 2012. Photo: Danielle Batist. The story in The Big Issue Japan magazine, April 2012. As a data entry operator, Doulath is involved in...
Protecting the messenger | Danielle Batist

Journalist, inspired by changemakers. When poverty-stricken South Sudan became independent in July, its list of priorities was huge. With security, food, health care, education and infrastructure all in urgent need of attention, developing the media landscape might seem a lost battle. But one independent radio station in Juba is fighting nonetheless. Radio Bakhita presenter Emmanuel Tombe (22) in the studio in Juba, South Sudan. Photo: Simon Murphy. Like Richard, presenter Emmanuel Tombe (22) also knows ...
Sudan’s most vulnerable – Inside the leper colony | Danielle Batist
https://daniellebatist.com/2013/04/03/sudans-most-vulnerable-inside-the-leper-colony
Journalist, inspired by changemakers. Sudan’s most vulnerable Inside the leper colony. The story of the leprocy colony in Rokwe featured in Norwegian magazine Megafon in September 2011. Despite being cured of leprosy, most of the patients stayed on in the village. Their often severe disabilities made life in one of the poorest regions in the world even harder for them than for most other people. And in the middle of the brutal civil war, the colony to many felt like the safest place to stay. 8220;I felt ...

Why me?
http://journopreneur.me/why-me
From story to product. From byline to bottom line. As soon as I saw that first-ever byline printed in black ink, I was hooked. Over the years, I got my BA and MA (with distinction) in journalism, but neither degree taught me the practical, hands-on skills I needed to grow my freelance business. I knew how to get the byline, but I didn’t know much about the bottom line. Through trial and error, and without any initial capital or contacts, I discovered the basics of journopreneurship. I became a news and f...

Five Things I Learned in February. In a futile attempt to be better about sharing, I thought I would attempt monthly posts about what I'm learning. We aren't halfway through March yet, so I'm counting this a success. We did NOT get NY Pizza OR a cheesesteak, but I did have some major travel delays resulting in a travel voucher so I guess that means I will have to go back! Thankfully we will find out soon! I'm so proud of him! And why is my car always a disaster? Posted by Danielle Bartran. 1 Over the wee...
