July 12, 2015. My initial response was, “Stop the car! Those beautiful ladies had no idea of the significance of the merchandise they were handling. To them salt is simply a way of making food taste a little better; a way of preserving food a little longer. At the end of the day, it’s a way of pleasing her husband’s palate and pockets. But to Jesus…it’s a light in the darkness. A glimpse of how things should be. A taste of what’s to come. Blog at WordPress.com. Send to Email Address.

May 21, 2015. 8211; Unlimited luggage allowance so we could bring the comforts of “home” along with us on our journey or perhaps even a Walmart in every place we live 🙂. 8211; Personal air conditioners…sized to fit each member of the family that we could strap to our backs. Oh yeah, no generator required to run them! 8211; Cheaper plane ticket prices so that we could go home more often for shorter periods of time or even bring family/friends over to our neck of the woods at least once a year. 8211; A po...

Let the little children come! August 16, 2015. So we’ve been back in the village for a little over a month now and we’ve settled back into a routine. We homeschool in the mornings and we study the Jula language in the afternoons. The rains have been coming more regularly which makes the weeds grow which in turn keeps folks busy in their fields. Recently, however, we had a neat interruption to our normal schedule. This used tent travelled al the way from Oklahoma! I even learned a new game!

August 20, 2016. August 20, 2016. I am a light sleeper. At times, to the detriment of my family so. What does that look like on the mission field? Well, let me describe it to ya. Close your eyes and put yourself in my pyjamas. After watching our nightly tv show together, Daniel and I roll over in opposite directions and say goodnight. My exhausted husband quickly (like within 20 seconds) starts snoring. No offense hun, but don’t sleep on your back. I try to close my eyes again, but it’s futile. Having su...

Skip to main content. Skip to secondary content. Everyday life…with a twist. Culture 101 – part 2 →. February 18, 2015. Although it’s been nearly ten years since we moved to the village, those first days will always be fresh in my mind. Sometimes it seems like only yesterday. Adjusting to life in another culture – there’s nothing like it. It’s exciting and overwhelming at the same time. Like I said before. Once you move to the village, getting your. It’s a great feeling to be able to function and b...

Skip to main content. Skip to secondary content. Everyday life…with a twist. Culture 101 – part 2. Back in the Saddle Again →. March 21, 2015. The countdown has begun! In less than 48 hours we will be back in our home country. I can almost hear the hum of English and smell the Starbucks coffee in the New York airport! We are only hours away from the hugs of family and friends and soft carpet under our feet. Milk out of a jug, all-American food (burgers and hotdogs, anyone? That I used to think it would be.

Skip to main content. Skip to secondary content. Everyday life…with a twist. Back in the Saddle Again. September 5, 2015. Well, it happened. I said it wouldn’t happen, but it did. I fell off the blogging wagon. And then furlough happened. After my head stopped spinning (that took about 6 weeks) I remembered that I had a blog. Hmmmit’s been a while. I should probably post something. What is there to say? How much I’m enjoying walking barefoot on dirtless floors? How Aaron can’t get enough chips and salsa?

Emerging from that seemingly endless tunnel of initial culture shock/adjustment is wonderful. You have a new-found freedom. Instead of continually asking, What is that? Or What are you doing? Have something to contribute something to share that’s interesting, that makes people laugh, or shake their heads in disbelief. (You mean you can drive a car? Some of the things that you see, hear, and e...

Skip to main content. Skip to secondary content. Everyday life…with a twist. Anticipating a Harvest →. October 10, 2014. What is it about other cultures that is so fascinating? The different foods, the beautiful clothes, the landscape, the houses, the languages. Everything is so mesmerizing and interesting. We long to see it firsthand, dream about taking a trip to experience it, and will pay a lot of money just to get a taste of what it’s like. Or, What’s it like living out there in the bush? But math an...

Skip to main content. Skip to secondary content. Everyday life…with a twist. Help Wanted →. January 22, 2015. Nowadays, my ingredients are limited to what I can buy in Kedougou (a 3-hour drive from our place). No more potato salad experiments. The colorfulness of the table depends on what is growing in our garden. And I’ve given up trying to mimic a delicious sausage soup when I the closest Italian Sausage is a thousand or so miles away. So, what did I do? I learned to accept it. I’ve learned to try to p...

Skip to main content. Skip to secondary content. Everyday life…with a twist. December 16, 2014. Aaron can’t believe I can remember what we ate 3 years ago! Wondering if he would take a few bites and then say he was full, meanwhile thinking, “How can they. Now, nearly 2 1/2 years later, after countless meals together, it’s hard to imagine. Sharing our mealtime with Mamadu. He has become like part of our family. Mamadu and Aaron building our bread oven. But it’s not all work and no play! There is tea (Sene...
