NASA’s Opportunity Rover, which has been on Mars for over a decade now, is moving past the infamous Jelly Donut rock. NASA determined Pinnacle Island, the rock’s official name, is a piece of a larger rock broken off by Opportunity’s wheel. The nictitating membrane, visible above as the iridescent, veiny pattern covering the eye, is essentially a third eyelid. It’s purpose is to wipe the surface of the eye.
