Over the past several years, I've been busy working on various projects that I thought may be of interest to other large scale model railroading enthusiasts. One of the most challenging project was Building the Daylight. It is a live steam locomotive in 1/8 scale (7-1/2 gauge). The wheel arrangement is 4-8-4 which puts it in the Northern class. Here's a current picture (2017) of the Engine. Four passenger cars have been built. Three are regular passenger cars (pictured below) with one observation car.

Observation Car

Here's the pile of metal for 4 cars just dropped off the truck. Doesn't look like much but it sure weighs enough (1/2 ton? These cars are heavy duty and weigh around 350 lbs each. I used 16 ga. (1/16) steel for the sides/skirting, 1/8 plate for the floor, solid 3/8 bars for the floor supports, etc. Lighter gauges could be used if a lighter (and less costly) car is wanted. Here's the Parts List. If you want the CAD drawings (.DWG format only) of the Observation Car, email me.

Engine Stand

The three leg sections of pipe were turned on my lathe for a good fit. The top and bottom legs were then welded to the plates which were then bolted onto the rail and wheel sub-assemblies. This allowed me to disassemble the stand for easy storage. Here's a side view of the highest and lowest settings. And a side view.
