Adventures of an English Teacher in Fukui City, Japan. Saturday, December 01, 2007. Question: What's it like to be a Jew in Japan? It is always interesting to see the quirks of the immigrant or foreigner in a new country. Why do they speak a different language? Why do they make strange foods? This was in Canada, where I was and am both a part of the majority group (as a white native speaker), and an eternal immigrant (because of my Hungarian Jewish roots). I went to Yakushima, in Southern Japan. I lo...

Daniel Viragh's Blog: Digging the Deep

http://danviragh.blogspot.com/2007/08/digging-deep.html

Adventures of an English Teacher in Fukui City, Japan. Thursday, August 30, 2007. Fukui City Museum of Natural History. Is a treasure-house of such fossils, shells, and beautifully preserved bones: though a small city by modern standards,. S geological history is wonderfully impressive and well preserved and studied. I had the luck and the pleasure of being shown around by Ms. Junko Anso, the museum’s curator, whom I had met by chance a few weeks before. She then showed me what are called bee corals.

Adventures of an English Teacher in Fukui City, Japan. Tuesday, October 24, 2006. Language. Enter the methodical, inter-referential representation of all that is experienced. A cave. Someone lights a small match for you; and suddenly giant shadows loom, before they disappear forever. Next match, please. The person, your friend, obliges. Shadows loom again; but wait, was that a pinnacle there? Was that yonder some ancient creek? Hungary-go is a banquet of the type medieval kings used to have, where everyb...

Daniel Viragh's Blog: September 2006

http://danviragh.blogspot.com/2006_09_01_archive.html

Adventures of an English Teacher in Fukui City, Japan. Tuesday, September 19, 2006. The Shinkansen is nice, modern, and impersonal. It’s pleasant to be back in clean! Modernity once more, with its suited businessmen, its I-care-not-for-the-world nonchalance, and the cool, brisk, air of yuppiness. It’s not only. That I have moved away from, but the modern metropolis. Time does not ‘speed up,’ as the common turn of phrase, or tournure de phrase. Now take a deep. Posted by Daniel Viragh at 2:12 PM.
