http://victimofthetime.blogspot.com/2012_10_01_archive.html
Monday, October 15, 2012. Written and directed by Brandon Cronenberg; starring Caleb Landry Jones, Sarah Gadon, Joe Pingue, Douglas Smith, Malcom McDowell. Syd (Caleb Landry Jones) and the allure of the viral. Comparisons to the oeuvre of director Brandon Cronenberg’s father are inevitable; certainly, the cool obsession with the corporeal is reminiscent of almost David’s entire filmography, but Antiviral. Or Todd Haynes’ Safe. But Syd is not a passive patient fading away like Safe. 8217;s Carol White; no...

Wednesday, April 13, 2011. Hit Me With Your Best Shot: Beauty's In The Eyes. This post is a contribution to the Hit Me With Your Best Shot. Series at The Film Experience. Before I sat down and watched Beauty and the Beast. Threat to the townspeople and the children he might snatch, whereas the original story is a much more enclosed, personal battle between the lead characters. But, watching the film again, this wasn't the only suggestion that Beauty and the Beast. It also makes for an intriguing visual c...

Victim of the Time: November 2011
http://victimofthetime.blogspot.com/2011_11_01_archive.html
Thursday, November 17, 2011. A Few Notes of a Tokyo Sonata. Begins with the patriarch of a Japanese family being dismissed, in a roundabout way (basically he costs too much and the Chinese are younger and cheaper), from his job at some nameless company. Hardly what someone currently unemployed (like me) wants from their evening's entertainment, but Kiyoshi Kurosawa's film turns out to be a deft, freewheeling, surprising portrait of a nuclear family dissipating amidst the worsening economic depression.

Victim of the Time: March 2012

Sunday, March 11, 2012. Queer Anglo Films, Take #3: Sebastiane. For our third discussion, James. And I move both forward and backwards in time. We're five years on from last take. But Derek Jarman's feature debut is set thousands of years back in Ancient Rome. There's something interesting about Sebastiane. And it's not just his penis. The film's natural equivocation of sex and violence (swords = penises, you know the drill - and Sebastian doesn't want to have sex so he refuses to clean those swords!

Victim of the Time: May 2011

Saturday, May 14, 2011. In Youth, with Death. Infamous butter fingers precede Last Tango in Paris. Mean that they don't know each other as well as Schneider and her fiancee Jean-Pierre Leaud do. It's hard, in a way, to take thoughtful resolutions as any kind of truth in a film where Brando monologues about climbing up the "ass of death". But personally, the fact that Last Tango in Paris. The point in relation to Last Tango in Paris. From childhood, from the restrictions imposed on her - restrictions that...

Victim of the Time: June 2011
http://victimofthetime.blogspot.com/2011_06_01_archive.html
Saturday, June 04, 2011. Let's get this out of the way. There's only one reason people see Freaks. These days. Here it is. Scientists and I are still baffled as to how this is realistically possible, but look at that jacket! Quite swank for a duck-lady, I think you'll agree. Mostly, though, it's in the facial expressions. Harry Earles is certainly expressive - watch as he mimicks Cleopatra's sycophantic pretence - but the emotional power of Freaks is almost entirely in Daisy Earles' melancholy faces&...

Victim of the Time: April 2012

Thursday, April 19, 2012. The LLGFF exploded my expectations, but also my fingers. The 26th London Lesbian and Gay Film Festival. Ended a few weeks ago, and I was fortunate enough to have joined the writing team at So So Gay. Just in time to be part of their team covering the event. Across the event I saw fifteen features, some accompanied by short films, and rounded it off with one programme of shorts. What's more pertinent here is that I reviewed. In rough order of my affection for them, then:. Tulli&#...
