Sunday, May 10, 2015. DD2: three years later. I know it's Mother's Day and my only real day off this week and a sick day for the kids, but also the mark of three years since Anne-Marie was diagnosed with a recurrence of cancer. Three years! That day we thought the sun wouldn't rise the next morning. Well, it did. And a eleven hundred days later it still does. Sunday, June 21, 2015. I'd been awake for about five seconds this morning when my two kids came running in my room and yelled "Happy Birthday" and threw a gift bag on my bed. By the time I heard them say "let me help you with that, daddy! They were already dumping the two shirts inside the bag on my head. Then they ran out. 15 seconds later- as if dissatisfied with their sneak attack- they ran back in the room yelling, "SAY THANK YOU, DADDY! I did and I can truly say that I am very thankful this morning.

I'm not sure why I was expecting today to really be something. But I was. I definitely did not think we'd get our news about a court date today, but I sure thought there would be some buzz. On the message boards as news trickled through the vast ET adoption community. Announcements from our agency. Nothing.

The first time I'd experience a sunrise in Africa. The first time I'd heard the chants from the Ethiopian Orthodox churches. The first time I woke to the sounds of goats, donkeys, roosters, and children in the streets. The first daylight drive through Addis Ababa. The first time I saw those blue gates in person.

There are no words- none- to describe how amazing meeting Baby R was. She is just the most perfect, beautiful, sweet baby ever. She gave Big Sister Maddy the first smile, she LOVED Sophie the giraffe, and I made her cry. True story! We get to see her again tomorrow! Those were the words I wrote 6 months ago (yesterday).
