Narrow boats SICKLE and CHALICE: Back to two boats in single locks - and the duvet from hell.
http://sickleandchalice.blogspot.com/2014/09/back-to-two-boats-in-single-locks-and.html
Narrow boats SICKLE and CHALICE. Saturday, 6 September 2014. Back to two boats in single locks - and the duvet from hell. Boat Sickle and Chalice - posted by Alan / Cath). Very retrospective post for Tuesday 26th August. Waiting at Atherstone after we had caught up slower boats. We were well positioned to start off up Atherstone locks in the morning, but, as we were just getting going, a number of other boats wishing to do the same turned up. Hartshill depot - full of character but sadly neglected looking.

Narrow boats SICKLE and CHALICE: Another Chapter In Our Boating Story
http://sickleandchalice.blogspot.com/2014/12/another-chapter-in-our-boating-story.html
Narrow boats SICKLE and CHALICE. Monday, 22 December 2014. Another Chapter In Our Boating Story. Well it has finally happened , after lots of false starts, and one persistently less than serious "seller". We can now announce that our "new" (old) boat is "Large Northwich" "Flamingo", originally built for the Grand Union Canal Carrying Company as their "Letchworth" by the same builder as "Sickle", (W J Yarwood and Sons), and in the same year, (1936). It can be found here. Subscribe to: Post Comments (Atom).

Narrow boats SICKLE and CHALICE: April 2014
http://sickleandchalice.blogspot.com/2014_04_01_archive.html
Narrow boats SICKLE and CHALICE. Saturday, 26 April 2014. Odin comes home from hospital. The short story is that Odin has been very ill with sepsis caused by peritonitis. He required three abdominal operations in 12 days. For the last two weeks he has been at the Queen Mother Animal Hospital which is attached to the Royal Veterinary College at North Mimms. He came home on Saturday 26th April. The long story is below. and it is a long story. He wasn’t, he had to be carried downstairs. So, we too...In the ...

Narrow boats SICKLE and CHALICE: THAT Tunnel, an Interesting Mill and a New but Shallow Canal.
http://sickleandchalice.blogspot.com/2011/08/that-tunnel-interesting-mill-and-new.html
Narrow boats SICKLE and CHALICE. Monday, 15 August 2011. THAT Tunnel, an Interesting Mill and a New but Shallow Canal. Boat Chalice - posted by Alan). You virtually pass below the railway waiting shelter. It would have been great if the Churnet Valley railway had been running today, as it parallels the canal for quite a while, but it was a "no trains" day on the timetable - well at least we got to sample it yesterday! We fail the tunnel heigh test fairly convincingly! That's me at the back! So we decided...

Narrow boats SICKLE and CHALICE: A good day - and a "mini banter".
http://sickleandchalice.blogspot.com/2014/09/a-good-day-and-mini-banter.html
Narrow boats SICKLE and CHALICE. Sunday, 7 September 2014. A good day - and a "mini banter". Boat Sickle and Chalice - posted by Alan). Very retrospective post for Wednesday 27th August. A maybe slightly different view of Hawkesbury pump-house from most taken. The run for home with two boats continued. This is only being written up about a week and a half later, and although I have memories of fairly long boating days, the statistics don't actually seem to reflect it. Throughout the day we were leap-frog...

Narrow boats SICKLE and CHALICE: July 2014
http://sickleandchalice.blogspot.com/2014_07_01_archive.html
Narrow boats SICKLE and CHALICE. Thursday, 31 July 2014. More progress than expected, and it's all really rather wonderful. Boat Sickle - posted by Alan). Retrospective post for Thursday 31st July. Another longish day, which I note has the highest mileage of any we have yet recorded since starting this trip. Tixall lock is one of the prettiest, I think. Many of the locks are attractive in different ways. Yet another very attractive lock. Ex Stewarts and Lloyds "Reginald", but no sign of owner Mike. Retro...

Narrow boats SICKLE and CHALICE: May 2014
http://sickleandchalice.blogspot.com/2014_05_01_archive.html
Narrow boats SICKLE and CHALICE. Saturday, 31 May 2014. A very busy day on the Stoke Bruerne Flight. Boat Chalice - posted by Cath). A very sluggish start this morning. We went for a wander through the woodland with Odin, then had a leisurely breakfast. By the time that we finally got going, there had been several boats moving through in both directions. The steerer got all of the Brownies, and their leaders, off the boat, then began to explain how the lock worked, including all the important safety feat...

Narrow boats SICKLE and CHALICE: March 2014
http://sickleandchalice.blogspot.com/2014_03_01_archive.html
Narrow boats SICKLE and CHALICE. Sunday, 9 March 2014. Despite 2014 being the first year where both of us are retired, things have actually conspired to mean we have done very little boating so far this year, and almost certainly less in the first couple of months that we might have done in years where Cath was working. Anyway. We are determined to show "Sickle" off at at least as many events as we have managed before, (particularly those that concentrate on the "historics), but we also want to do as...

Narrow boats SICKLE and CHALICE: Storming a tunnel, then pausing for a boat viewing.
http://sickleandchalice.blogspot.com/2014/09/storming-tunnel-then-pausing-for-boat.html
Narrow boats SICKLE and CHALICE. Sunday, 7 September 2014. Storming a tunnel, then pausing for a boat viewing. Boat Sickle and Chalice - posted by Alan). Very retrospective post for Friday 29th August. Not a lot to report, really. If we are going North from, or returning South to, the home mooring for either boat then the Grand Union South of Norton Junction is the route involved. As a consequene we normally travel the stretch we were on today many times a year. In fact, on arrival at Blisworth a call to...
