Shore Construction and Testing Exercise. March 6, 2003. For the sake of time, the shore that was tested was partially pre-constructed. The shore did not follow strict FEMA construction standards as stainless steel screws were used in lieu of nails. In addition, two vertical-three-post shores were tied together to form a Class III shore. Diagram A below shows the setup of the test stand and diagram B shows the layout of the shore. The primary purpose of the exercise was to test FEMA's rapid mobilization capabilities and NASA's ability to support them. This exercise was intended to help NASA and FEMA assess their ability to bring together personnel from several federal, state and local agencies to mobilize an organized response to a large-scale disaster. Hurricane Iniki Deployment 1992

Return to the DART Activation's and Deployments page. In September of 1992, disaster struck the Hawaiian Islands as Hurricane Iniki battered the Island of Kauai. On a Friday night, eleven DART team members deployed with California Task Force 3. This represented DART's first deployment with CaTF-3. It also represented CaTF-3 first deployment. As it turned out, the task force was not needed. Still, the knowledge gained and the camaraderie developed was beneficial to the growth of DART and CaTF-3.
