The flaw in the derived trait concept is the premise that a morphological or functional ancestral trait in an ancestor species. Was acquired from an immediate ancestor species and modified to perform a different morphological or functional role in a descendant species. For an ancestral species's genome to be the source of a trait that is modified into a trait in a descendant's genome, both traits must be components of the same genome at some time. The derived trait concept is a contrived relationship.
