Websheets | QED and NOM
https://daveagp.wordpress.com/2015/07/03/websheets
Next week I am headed to the ITiCSE conference (Innovation and Technology in Computer Science Education), in Vilnius, Lithuania, to present Websheets, an exercise system for programming problems in C and Java. Websheets combines a couple of ideas. It is an online system where students get immediate feedback on their programming solutions. This has become very common in recent years, though not many support C , and not many are open-source (the biggest exception being the awesome CloudCoder. Leave a Reply...

What I Ate at SIGCSE. About 2 weeks ago, I went to SIGCSE, which is the major computer science education conference. I talked about Computer Science Circles. Its translations to other languages and translations of Python error messages to English; see the poster here. Like my last trip to SIGCSE, it was pretty great. I got to re-encounter previous colleagues, meet new ones, commiserate about C , look at cool tools, learn more about pair programming. The food scene was also a good surprise! Enter an email...
C++ Drawing Library | QED and NOM

Combinatorics: Ancient and Modern. Over the last couple of weeks, I’ve been building a graphics/animation library to use in the class that I’m teaching at USC. It’s now in a stable state and has the features that I think I’ll need this semester. Of course, with Java, you have the benefit of native platform support, and their library is a wrapper over the java.awt and javax.swing libraries. In my case, after a lot of false starts, the only C library that. I could get working on my VM. That member function...

Newer posts ». Tehran’s awesome mountain backdrop. I had an amazing vacation this year! For 3 weeks I travelled to Iran where I got to visit several historic cities, meet my wife’s extended family, and participate in my sister-in-law’s amazing wedding. This was followed by one more fantastic week in Mexico for my brother’s destination wedding, which deserves its own post later. One thing several friends have asked is: how difficult is to get to Iran in the first place? Once that was approved, I got a vis...
What Is ASCII? | QED and NOM
https://daveagp.wordpress.com/2015/02/15/what-is-ascii
What I Ate at SIGCSE. I am not a historian. I am just a Computer Science educator who likes reading Wikipedia and printing funny characters. This explanation is a long optional appendix for a programming assignment. ASCII is the American Standard Code for Information Interchange. Developed starting in 1960, it was a way of standardizing means of communication between computers. To explain, it’s useful to note that “8 bits” means two things from the perspective of a C programmer. In C , a char. Was led by...

Reasoning objectively is difficult because we are all biased by our own subjective experiences. There are two ways I can see to address this. The first is to consider others’ subjective experiences in addition to your own. This gives you what many would call a more. Point of view. Because one site of pretentious elitism wasn't enough. Newer posts →. I have a confession to make: I’m scared of approximations. Scandalous, isn’t it? For there are few things in physics that can be solved exactly, and so if we want to ever be able to do any calculations, rather than just sitting around and writing down one PDE after another that nobody will ever solve, we simply can’t do without approximations. What kind of physics major doesn’t like approximations? A right triangle, and. There’s ...

Do people like, still blog? August 1, 2016. July was too hot to spend a lot of time outside, that means no parks or backyard play for the kids. In the middle of the month, Apollo started his summer camp so he didn’t get too antsy (plus at the beginning of the month there were a lot of new toys from our trips and Jovian’s birthday). Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice. July 23, 2016. I also heard that the movie was a bit heavy-handed in the whole “Control of the Gods” theme. Luthor is supposed to scheme, S...

Do people like, still blog? October 17, 2015. One of the reasons I bought the One Plus Two was because it had dual sim card slots. There are a lot of Chinese phones that have dual SIM card slots, but the OPT is one of the first ones with Western world support (the other being ZenPhone 2). From past research I knew that usually dual SIMs meant that the second sim would be GSM only, so before deciding on the OPT, I did research to verify that both slots could indeed support 4G. And thank you for visiting my Website. As you can see from my gallery, I do not have a particular set theme, preferring to enjoy photography as an entity in itself and therefore end up taking pictures of a wide variety of subjects. I have been involved in photography of one degree or another for as long as I can remember, graduating to my first SLR back in the 70's (Minolta SRT101- a film camera for the benefit of any of you too young to know! Cinnamon Cocoa Coffee Cake. Coffee cake is one of my favourite foods to bake: it’s simple and delicious, and beats paying big bucks per slice at cafes. I had some cocoa lying around in my pantry and decided I should figure out a way to get it into a coffee cake. However, recipes for this sort of thing seem to be sort of rare. So, I hodge-podged together these three recipes: 1 with cocoa filling. 1 with cocoa-walnut filling. And 1 with cocoa-walnut topping. 3 tbsp dutch-process cocoa. Heavy pinch of salt.
