2 wheels and no sense. My Motorcycle travel blog. Bye Bye Malawi. Hello Mozambique. We rattled, skidded and slid in the sand and finally made it to “Fat Monkeys” campsite, right on the beach. Sweeet! Alas, all good things come to an end. With a phone call to the petrol station, I was told fuel was once more available so we packed up and head off the next morning. The rain had been hard the night before and the road had turned into a muddy swamp. I was ok on my DRZ but James’ BMW with road tyres...You can...

Sunday, 31 July 2011. Turkey - Return to Istanbul - Day 371(26,660 miles). After 32 days and just over 3000 miles (4800 km) we arrived back in Istanbul, neither of us expected to cover so much ground but Turkey is a big old country and there is still alot for us to come back and explore another time. A welcome back cake from the club members, suitably served on top of a map of Turkey! Metmin, Tatiana and Yasmin and a selection of biscuits (to go with the cake! A joy to visit on a hot day is the Basilica ...

Monday, 24 January 2011. Thailand - The Mai Hong Son Loop Day 183 (16,892 miles). We escaped the comfort and ease of Chiang Mai, the daily yoga classes, Boots the chemist, everyone understanding English and headed south west. The Mai Hong Son loop is a favourite amongst motorcyclists for great twisty, hilly roads and pretty countryside within easy reach of Chiang Mai. Wat Chong Kahm temple below was across the lake from our guesthouse. We spent sometime at the local moped mechanics while John tried to ge...

Saturday, 27 November 2010. Australia - North of Adelaide. Day 128 ( 11,610 miles). Before Vic and Stew headed back home from Adelaide we visited Bjoern and Sigrid who bought Stew’s last bike (a Suzuki DR650) in preparation for their own ‘Big Trip’ planned for 2012. John and I ended up staying with them for 3 days! They are lovely people who made us feel incredibly welcome. Sigrid, Bjoern and us at their local Thai restaurant (very nice! Auburn was a quaint little place we stopped for a bum break. The ne...

2 wheels and no sense. My Motorcycle travel blog. Archive for the 'South America' Category. A few LONG days later we made it to the Colombian border. Venezuela gave us our final sour taste by demanding an “Exit fee”, AKA bribe before they would stamp our exit visas and let us leave the country. I dont want people to think I didnt enjoy Venezuela but it has the potential to be so much better if they would just chill out a little. What I learned about travelling is that you really cant plan anything and I&...

2 wheels and no sense. My Motorcycle travel blog. Luxor, Aswan and the ferry to Sudan. Well, it’s been a long time since my last post and so much has happened that I don’t know where to start. From my last post, we were all kicking back and enjoying the sun, sea and scuba in Hurghada, Egypt. The prices were rediculously expensive and required much bartering to get the beer down from 2 quid a bottle to 95p! My salesmen skill come in handy now and again! Not much for us in luxor so off we headed to Aswan a...

Tuesday, 22 February 2011. Laos - South to Luang Prabang - Day 198 (17,638 miles). At the bike wash Laos style. Nice kids who were interested in the bike when we stopped in their village. Unfortunately John had a tummy bug for a couple of days, luckily it was while we were in Luang Prabang so at least he had a nice room with a decent bathroom and there was plenty for me to do while he didn’t feel up to sightseeing or riding. Not a bad spot for a game of volleyball. With John feeling better we had a cultu...

2 wheels and no sense. My Motorcycle travel blog. Apologies fro my lack of recent posts. It’s been quite some time hasn’t it! Subscribe and make sure you buy the January edition to read my full account of Sudan. For now, you may have the very abridged version below 😉. Luckily Dave and Steph in the Landy were just behind an...

2 wheels and no sense. My Motorcycle travel blog. Christmas Eve….The border crossing from Tanzania to Malawi was straight forward as most of Africa is. We were in and out within an hour which was just as well in this new tropical heat. What was different was the tenacity of the money changers. We were literally mobbed by 30 guys all waving money in our faces. I was almost pulled off my bikes by these guys desperate to make a little commission. Alas, we were in Malawi and finally heading to the lake!
