Dave Hubble's ecology spot. Wildlife, conservation, ecology and related sciences - mainly British, but some from further afield. Sit back, read, think, enjoy. Welcome to my blog. This is where I post various musings about wildlife and ecology, observations of interesting species (often invertebrates). And bits of research that grab my attention. As well as blogging, I undertake professional ecological and wildlife surveys. I don't work on planning applications/for developers. The pages on the right.

I know what a statesman is -it's a dead politician.we need more statesmen! Thursday, March 1, 2012. Just Say No To Corporate Greed: The Case Of Iceland. Http:/ www.informationclearinghouse.info/article30662.htm. Just Say No To Corporate Greed: The Case Of Iceland. February 28, 2012 ". Happily there are some instances of people saying no to this madness. Iceland is a great example of people who stood up and fought for civility. It more or less did what it was supposed to do to serve local needs. An or...

I know what a statesman is -it's a dead politician.we need more statesmen! Thursday, October 27, 2011. Phil Goff's Election Time Suicide Gaffe. What the hell does Phil Goff think he's doing being drawn into engagement with National on the raising of the pension age a month before the election? Nowhere. Instead, Labour are effectively buying-into Nationals vision of the future world by addressing the "affordability" of future pensions in this way. Links to this post. Wednesday, October 19, 2011. Kevthefarmer: EU now belongs to Goldman Sachs
http://kevthefarmer.blogspot.com/2011/12/this-is-from-uk.html
I know what a statesman is -it's a dead politician.we need more statesmen! Friday, December 9, 2011. EU now belongs to Goldman Sachs. This is from uk.yahoo news. I always like this stuff from mainstream sources as I feel that, for doubters and waverers, it carries more weight than stuff from the more "alternative" sources. See the original article. Something similar happened in Ireland, where Peter Sutherland, attorney general in the 1980s and former EU competition commissioner, became non-executive chai...

Check out our Wish List! The insect educational program I run has a wish list for supplies we use regularly to care for our animals: Bug Barn Amazon Wish List. Please consider buying the Bug Barn some cages or crayons! That lets me use the savings to hire more undergraduates for hands on training. This is an Archive! http://thecuriousnaturalist.blogspot.com/2015_02_01_archive.html
About The Curious Naturalist. Sunday, 22 February 2015. Belize 2015: first day at Chan Chich. The next morning my eyes open long before dawn and my ears take in the night-time soundscape of the forest at Chan Chich. This is one of my favourite places in which to wake up: I love to lie in the guides' cabin here and just listen to the forest come alive. Owls often sing in the pre-dawn: Spectacled Pulsatix perspicillata. Vermiculated Screech Megascops guatemalae. A bird of drier, non-forest areas. This ...

The Curious Naturalist: Norfolk moths: Rockland St. Peter garden, 8 July 2016
http://thecuriousnaturalist.blogspot.com/2016/07/norfolk-moths-rockland-st-peter-garden.html
About The Curious Naturalist. Saturday, 9 July 2016. Norfolk moths: Rockland St. Peter garden, 8 July 2016. It has been a cool, wet summer, so 20°C made a respectably warm day, and with partly cloudy skies in the evening it looked to be a good night to get out the trap. The temperature held up, with 17.5°C when I turned on the MV light at 22h00 and 13°C when I turned it off at 04h00. A light E breeze. Waxing new moon. New macro moths for the garden were Blue-bordered Carpet. 102 moths of 43 spp.). Penny'...

About The Curious Naturalist. Friday, 9 September 2016. Chalcolestes viridis Willow Emerald Damselfly, a new Norfolk garden arrival. Full text to follow]. Having never seen its widespread British cousin, Lestes sponsa. In our garden I have never expected to encounter this new arrival. First seen yesterday, but it took flight and disappeared before I could get photos. Despite the stiff breeze it was on the same low perch today, 50 cm up next to bushes, well away from water. 3 February 2017 at 14:55. Norfo...

Mixed media & collage. BAS8 2: Evoking essential Britishness. Following my thoughts on some of the film and video art. In BAS8, it seems appropriate to look at something more solidly material, Stuart Whipps. The Kipper and the Corpse. This is an ongoing work where a 1979 Mini is gradually restored by ex-workers of Longbridge Motor Works and exhibited as an installation at different stages of completion in the various galleries hosting BAS8. For me, having had a chance to reflect and revisit, this is what...

Dave Hubble | Poetry & Prose
November 28, 2016. November 28, 2016. The sounds, images and objects in BAS8 provide a rich vein of writing inspiration, not least. All That Is Solid. By John Akomfrah and Trevor Mathison. This piece combines new and archival footage to look at how sound is essentially transient and thus unable to record history effectively. The piece makes much use of foggy, misty imagery, and given the current political shift towards the (Far) Right, this evokes Hitler’s ominous ‘ Night and Fog. All That Is Solid.
