Dave Mackey..the runner, not the ice hockey player

Thursday, December 12, 2013. The Dirty Double Part One: Quad Dipsea. The Legends (John Medinger and John Catts) and me. I was registered for TNF 50 for the past two months, and planned on peaking somewhat for it. To maybe get on the podium? And see what happens? But here first of all, my splits: I guess going with lower expectations and pressure can lead to faster overall times. http:/ www.run100s.com/splits/13qd.htm. Start = 8:00 AM. Lap 1 = 8:55 AM. 0:55:00, 0:55:00 (nearest minute.I had 55:30. With ze...

Dave Mackey..the runner, not the ice hockey player: September 2013

http://davemackey.blogspot.com/2013_09_01_archive.html

Monday, September 23, 2013. Run Rabbit Run 2013 report: Failure, but hey that’s okay. At the top of Mt Werner. Coming into Run Rabbit Run 100, I was super excited. I hadn’t run an ultra in three months and felt relatively rested. I had no injuries and. Had spent time at altitude in the past six weeks and had been sleeping and resting in my Hypoxico. I had raced on Pikes Peak with respectable times and recovered well from back to back efforts overall. After being up for 24 hours dealing with the water in ...

Dave Mackey..the runner, not the ice hockey player: June 2011

http://davemackey.blogspot.com/2011_06_01_archive.html

Sunday, June 26, 2011. Overall, even though what I experienced Saturday was truly inspiring and phenomenal in many ways, I felt had a mediocre race at Western this year. Got 8. In the race, but won the Montrail Cup. I felt rather blase for most of the day with no real low-points, but nI ever felt like I could accelerate at any given time either. I continue to underestimate the recovery that needs to occur on a deep level from these things called ultras.I guess being 41 will do that to you! At Hwy 49, the...

Dave Mackey..the runner, not the ice hockey player: March 2012

http://davemackey.blogspot.com/2012_03_01_archive.html

Thursday, March 15, 2012. I've been running in Injinji. For the past few months and love the lack of blisters and super comfort and am thrilled to be part of the Injinji Team! It's amazing what covering each of your toes in these socks have done to prevent blister: zero blisters in two ultras this year, and in training, as well . (I messed the beta I gave Injinji in the press release; I have raced at two races this year so far, not one as it says in the press release; my mistake). Okay, back to racing mo...

The (mis)adventures of a caffeinated (wannabe) ultra runner. Tuesday, November 4, 2014. Forgetting Where I Stashed my Battery. I was going to do a write up about my recent Cactus Rose 100 DNF but decided to write about something that happened to me during the race…something much more enjoyable (now that I look back because, at the time, it was horrifying). I think deep down inside I was probably thinking “I’ll worry about that when my light goes out? 8221; Not a good idea. My choices were to either run b...

Jon Kroll: Miwok 100k

http://jonkroll.blogspot.com/2011/05/miwok-100k.html

Tuesday, May 10, 2011. This past weekend I ran the Miwok 100k Trail Race. 3-D view of the course. I had checked my training log the night before the race and realized that this race would be my longest run since I ran the Western States 100 nearly two years ago. It would also be my last big training run leading up to Comrades. Elevation profile of Miwok course. Coming into the first aid station (photo by Randy Katz). Jon Kroll: May 2011

http://jonkroll.blogspot.com/2011_05_01_archive.html

Tuesday, May 31, 2011. On Sunday I had the pleasure of running the Comrades Marathon. Actually a 54-mile ultramarathon) in South Africa with 12,000 other runners. Yes, you read that right. There's an ultramarathon with 12,000 runners. This is the worlds oldest (first run in 1921) and largest ultra, and the centerpiece of South African running culture. But rather "how many Comrades have you run? Comrades assigns different-colored bib number colors to runners for various situations, including:. As an inter...

The (mis)adventures of a caffeinated (wannabe) ultra runner. Saturday, December 7, 2013. Under-estimating A Good Warm Up No More. Lately, I've begun to appreciate a good warm up before a run. Considering I've been running quite a while, I'm surprised it took me this long to learn this, but better late than never. The simple truth is that I have discovered that I run better when fully warmed up than when not. No more Mr. Don't Warm Up guy! Sunday, December 1, 2013. The last month of 2013 is upon us, and I...

The (mis)adventures of a caffeinated (wannabe) ultra runner: May 2014

http://bens-running-mis-adventures.blogspot.com/2014_05_01_archive.html

The (mis)adventures of a caffeinated (wannabe) ultra runner. Friday, May 9, 2014. Running makes everything alright.even if for a little while. Yesterday, I visited my grandfather who is pretty ill at the hospital. After seeing him, I was not in any mood to do anything but sulk. I even skipped my p/t job of coaching.and I love coaching. Besides, by the time I returned it was pretty late, so I just sat on my couch for a bit. I didn't do anything.just sat there. We were meant to be friends! Running is a par...

A wannabe runner tries the blog to help others or help himself. Monday, August 27, 2012. 32 - Leadville 100M. Wow, unbelievable that it’s even hard to run 5k now. At this point, there is no turning back. Was this a good or bad sign? Damn it, up Hope then to Winfield it is. When I said earlier that at mile 25 the race took a turn for the worst this is the place where it felt apart! Again, going out of the AS was hard, more folks were quitting and I wasn’t feeling it at all but in my mind all I neede...
