Son of Higashi: Akashobin
http://sonofhigashi.blogspot.com/2011/06/akashobin.html
Reborn in the Village of Pineapples. Today, there was quite a ruckus after fourth period class right before lunch. It turns out a bird (known here as akashobin. Or ruddy kingfisher) had flown into the school, smacked against a window, and found itself not so much capable of immediately flying back out. Students and teachers gathered around, nobody willing to take the first step in getting the bird to safety. Here's a shot I took before picking the bird up and getting him out of the men's bathroom.

Son of Higashi: No Sense of Discipline
http://sonofhigashi.blogspot.com/2012/03/no-sense-of-discipline.html
Reborn in the Village of Pineapples. No Sense of Discipline. I can't believe it's been as long as it has since I last wrote a post. I don't have any good reasons. Just a reason. I didn't have anything that I felt was worth writing about. That sounds kind of ridiculous when I read it. I think the larger issue is that I'm not very good at figuring out how. To make regular occurrences interesting. Not yet, anyway. From Astronomy Picture of the Day. Thoughts of Son of Higashi. View my complete profile.

Son of Higashi: July 2010

Reborn in the Village of Pineapples. Sea Creatures that Sting. Yesterday, I had a very interesting first experience: I was stung by a venomous creature in the waters of Higashi. During the summer, groups of students from two villages on the mainland of Japan come to Higashi to participate in an exchange program of sorts. While only lasting for a few days, one of those days is always spent at the beach. The kids swim, canoe, snorkel, and ride a banana boat (seen below). It's really great fun.

Son of Higashi: October 2010
http://sonofhigashi.blogspot.com/2010_10_01_archive.html
Reborn in the Village of Pineapples. I am happy to report that, as of today, October 29, 2010, I am debt free. The payment scheme I adopted for my student loans has varied over the past few years. When I worked in Chicago, I paid more than the minimum payment. But I put a lot more of my money into investment accounts, since the interest rates back then meant that I was earning more money than I was paying on my loans. There were no fireworks. No special feeling, really. Just the realization that ...I'm a...

Son of Higashi: January 2011
http://sonofhigashi.blogspot.com/2011_01_01_archive.html
Reborn in the Village of Pineapples. I've been in Japan for almost three and a half years. And I realized I have never really given a good overview of some of the more basic aspects of my daily life. For example, what each of my three schools are like, how they differ. Or a mention of what kinds of activities I get involved in during my free time. Higashi: what kind of place is it? My Schools: Higashi, Arume, and Takae. My Perspective of Life as an Assistant Language Teacher. Living in the Inaka.

Son of Higashi: November 2010
http://sonofhigashi.blogspot.com/2010_11_01_archive.html
Reborn in the Village of Pineapples. Anyway, it's gotten cold in Okinawa. What's cold? There's no official measure, but to me it's the feeling of having to wear long sleeve shirts and long pants to stay warm, even in my own home. Granted, the temperature is more likely somewhere around the lower-60s, but in Japan (especially in my teachers' housing) lack of insulation and heating systems makes even mild temperatures sometimes feel downright cold. Son of Higashi: June 2011
http://sonofhigashi.blogspot.com/2011_06_01_archive.html
Reborn in the Village of Pineapples. It's been four years since I've been back to the US since coming to Okinawa. I'm heading back for a combination of reasons. The impetus for the trip came from my friend Dougal who is getting married on June 19th. Before and after the wedding, I will be meeting up with family in a couple of different locations. It's going to be fun! Alright, off to Naha! Thoughts of Son of Higashi. Here's a shot I took before picking the bird up and getting him out of the men's bathroom.

http://senderinmail.blogspot.com/2008_09_01_archive.html
Motivation to send erin mail. I'm writing so you will be inspired to send me mail. So seriously, send me a letter! The great questions of our time. By the magic of a cellular modem donated by my friend Sarah when she headed back to the US, I am writing this from the comfort of my own home. That's right, as of right now my family doesn't have water but I have internet. Sometimes the place between developed and developing creates odd circumstances. I don't mean to be crude, but really, it's kind of an impo...

Motivation to send erin mail. I'm writing so you will be inspired to send me mail. So seriously, send me a letter! I've had a lot of people ask me to post some pictures. and I'm finally going to stop being so lazy and show you a little of my world! This is my house (and very much my home). Well, half of this is my house. I love it here. This is the Middle School where I work. We're painting our World Map on the other side of the white building! Most schools in South Africa look a lot like this. If you wi...
