Dave's Part: National Union of Journalists: in dispute with Sheridan and Byrne

http://davespartblog.blogspot.com/2006/11/national-union-of-journalists-in.html

Friday, November 24, 2006. National Union of Journalists: in dispute with Sheridan and Byrne. When Tommy Sheridan and Rosemary Byrne quit the Scottish Socialist Party three months ago, they also pulled out of the collective agreement under which the SSP’s caseworkers, researchers and parliamentary assistants are employed. The two Solidarity MSPs also withdrew 48,000 from the pooled account that paid the wages. As a result, the jobs are under threat. You can read the SSP’s take here. Hat tip: Harry’s Place.

Dave's Part: John McDonnell: manifesto for London

http://davespartblog.blogspot.com/2006/11/john-mcdonnell-manifesto-for-london.html

Thursday, November 23, 2006. John McDonnell: manifesto for London. With the London Labour Party Conference due to take place this weekend. Labour leadership contender John McDonnell former deputy leader of the Greater London Council before Thatcher abolished it, of course has launched a ten-point manifesto for London. 1 A new ‘Fares Fair’ policy for the 21st Century, slashing fares for Londoners. 5 A real living wage of at least 7 per hour, plus a London weighting of 20%. 6 Decentralised London energy sy...

Dave's Part: Blair, Musharraf and the Euston Manifesto group

http://davespartblog.blogspot.com/2006/11/blair-musharraf-and-euston-manifesto.html

Saturday, November 18, 2006. Blair, Musharraf and the Euston Manifesto group. The idea that Tony Blair's motivation in backing the invasion of Iraq was a desire to spread democracy in place of military dictatorship was one of the central arguments of the 'pro-war left'. So they will presumably be perplexed by the news. Verbal praise for a tyrant's 'courage, strength and indefatigability', or handing over a cheque for 480m? So let me put a couple of questions to the Euston Manifesto supporters that read t...

http://davespartblog.blogspot.com/2006/11/milton-friedman-and-miracle-of-chile.html

Monday, November 20, 2006. Milton Friedman and 'the miracle of Chile'. Margaret Thatcher summed up. The feelings of many on the political right on hearing of the death of economist Milton Friedman - pictured left - last week:. Milton Friedman revived the economics of liberty when it had been all but forgotten,'. He was an intellectual freedom fighter.'. Pinochet abolished the minimum wage, took away trade union bargaining rights, privatised the pension system, abolished all taxes on wealth and profits, s...

Dave's Part: Saturday Night Music Club: gigs of a lifetime

http://davespartblog.blogspot.com/2006/11/saturday-night-music-club-gigs-of_18.html

Saturday, November 18, 2006. Saturday Night Music Club: gigs of a lifetime. Our topic this week is gigs of a lifetime. Forget about the quality of the music. Tell us about the most enjoyable evening you ever spent watching a band. I almost opted for one of the several Generation X shows I saw in 1977 here. Somehow, the memory of pogoing to Billy Idol and Co in the front row of the Marquee while wired on amphetamine sulphate encapsulates my misspent youth for me. Who I know is a fellow fan. How well will ...

Thoughts of Chairperson Mikey: February 2010

http://thoughts-of-chairperson-mikey.blogspot.com/2010_02_01_archive.html

Thoughts of Chairperson Mikey. Life is not an easy matter. You cannot live through it without falling into frustration and cynicism unless you have before you a great idea which raises you above personal misery, above weakness, above all kinds of perfidy and baseness." Leon Trotsky. Saturday, February 27, 2010. There is a new magazine out this week, produced by my friends in the Fourth International. More when it becomes available. Links to this post. Friday, February 26, 2010. An excellent new blog.

This blog is now closed. It isn't really anywhere - it's somewhere else. Friday, August 04, 2006. The cold in our eyes. Is it anti-semitic to criticise Israel? Is it anti-semitic to criticise Zionism? Is it anti-semitic, even, to oppose. Zionism - to believe that the state of Israel (as established in 1948) was a thoroughly bad idea which should be replaced by something better? Sir Oswald, would you care to comment? Had developed a similar argument). Since Fascists are primarily concerned with buildi...

http://existingactually.blogspot.com/2006/11/never-be-your-woman.html

This blog is now closed. It isn't really anywhere - it's somewhere else. Friday, November 24, 2006. Never be your woman. Today the newspapers report. That sexual harassment of teachers and pupils in schools is widespread, and that girls are starting to accept sexist language as the norm . Have I simply dragged some value set from the distant past, which I want to see imposed upon this new social avant garde? The horror, the horror. I am not a Hegelian. oh all right then, I'm a recovering. Take us back fo...

This blog is now closed. It isn't really anywhere - it's somewhere else. Thursday, December 21, 2006. No secrets left to conceal. Dr Phil Edwards is the national press officer of the BNP. And, by the way, Dr Phil Edwards isn't his real name. It is Stuart Russell. When asked, Dr Edwards/Russell tetchily says he uses a pseudonym for 'personal reasons' and it's none of my business why. He is not unusual among his cohorts. Several have used names other than their own for 'personal reasons'. The Doc and his m...

This blog is now closed. It isn't really anywhere - it's somewhere else. Monday, February 12, 2007. Inconsequentially: it occurred to me the other day that I'm firmly convinced that some kinds of food and drink are good for you. In most cases this belief doesn't appear to have any rational basis - although in some cases it's probably based on experience, which is almost as good. Anyone else have a similar list at the back of their mind, or is it just me? Those clear broth ones. They're good for you&#...

This blog is now closed. It isn't really anywhere - it's somewhere else. Friday, February 02, 2007. Music of the future. About twenty years ago there was a Radio 4 sketch show called Son of Cliché. Scripted by the not-yet-celebrated Rob Grant and Dave Naylor. Nick Wilton was one of the regulars (what's he. Doing these days, I wondered when I remembered this; the answer's " panto, mainly. This blog is now closed. It isn't really anywhere - it's somewhere else. Wednesday, March 28, 2007. The best one of the year. Two announcements. Firstly, this is the last post here; there are no posts newer than 28th March 2007 on this blog and there won't be any in future. I've merged AE with my work weblog Cloud Street. And moved to Wordpress; the result is The Gaping Silence. Secondly, here's a book:. More specifically, it's funny. I'm not going to tell you it's all. Funny would be prima facie. Would ...

This blog is now closed. It isn't really anywhere - it's somewhere else. Tuesday, February 20, 2007. Red, gold and green. David Cameron: active hypocrite or passive hypocrite? Hypocrite, who advocates standards for other people which he couldn't meet himself. I'd got this far in my thinking about Cameron - which was broadly in alignment with Jim's - when a colleague asked an unexpected question: What if he'd been a shoplifter? And, relatedly, would anybody much care? On one of the two or three days when ...

This blog is now closed. It isn't really anywhere - it's somewhere else. Saturday, November 25, 2006. It's no problem, you can't have it. Robert Skidelsky, author in 1975 of a rather nasty biography of Oswald Mosley (on which I've commented. Will do again), is going strong as a cross-bench peer and occasional newspaper commentator. Witness this piece. In last Friday's Indie. Wrote in the current LRB. Had it right, again: "A critique seeking to go beyond the spectacle must know how to wait. Said O'Brien i...

Je reste mon coeur à Paris

Je reste mon coeur à Paris. Saturday, June 19, 2010. Who knew that the UK would be a part of my study abroad? Mom, Dad and I met here in the middle of the week to have drinks before dinner. Yet again, another beautiful day! The Serpentine Lake in Hyde Park. See what I mean about European clouds?
