In 1970, the Hampshire County Museum Service owned a twin-lens Rolleiflex camera; a fine camera but perhaps not ideal for taking close-up photographs of plants and insects. Tuesday, 16 September 2014. The brief and glorious flowering of the Arctic summer. The tallest shrub of the High Arctic. From the moving coach and this was a species I particularly wanted to see. As well as this, we found specimens of the Arctic Poppy Papaver radicatum. And a fine saxifrage Saxifraga cotyledon. What a superb plant, especially when growing in quantity. This is a most interesting element of the Icelandic flora in that it is Nearctic, occurring nowhere further east. About Inspired by Ecology.

Wednesday, 28 November 2012. More recently my wife picked up that very attractive green spider Araniella cucurbitana. And to her surprise, it gave her a nasty nip that was really quite unpleasant. Even more unpleasant was a nip from a harvestman that was nestling in a pot of chamomile she had bought from a local garden centre.
