CONTRARY BRIN: Science Fiction for Young Adults: A Recommended List
http://davidbrin.blogspot.com/2011/11/science-fiction-for-young-adults.html
LOOKING TOWARD THE FUTURE. Wednesday, November 09, 2011. Science Fiction for Young Adults: A Recommended List. What books can we give our teens that don't mire them in a swamp of vampires, domineering wizards or nostalgia for feudalism? These are a few of my personal science fiction favorites for young adults, weighted more toward SF and a little common sense mixed with lots of sense-o-wonder. Many are classics that I grew up with.along with some marvelous recent additions. Anderson, M.T. This Nebula Awa...
CONTRARY BRIN: Space: Past and Future
http://davidbrin.blogspot.com/2015/05/space-past-and-future.html
LOOKING TOWARD THE FUTURE. Friday, May 22, 2015. Space: Past and Future. At NIAC - NASA's Innovative and Advanced Concepts group. We aim to nurture bold ideas with small, seed grants. Have a look at this year's phase one recipients. Including some that are darned interesting, daring, even risky. And you. Are a member of a civilization that does stuff like this. See also endeavors like this one, learning to create a closed ecosystem on Mars. Looking back on the Hubble =. Helping to determine the age and d...
CONTRARY BRIN: World Cultures Compete (as memes) Over Human Destiny
http://davidbrin.blogspot.com/2007/12/world-cultures-compete-as-memes-over.html
LOOKING TOWARD THE FUTURE. Sunday, December 09, 2007. World Cultures Compete (as memes) Over Human Destiny. This will be one of my super-wide perspectives on cultures in conflict, comparing confrontations of the past (the Cold War) to our present North-South crises, and continuing through what may be (I predicted, long ago) the final, East-West struggle over the ultimate shape of human governance, across the centuries to come. All tie together, I promise! One of my ongoing themes. Though sworn to protect...
CONTRARY BRIN: A look back at our origins
http://davidbrin.blogspot.com/2015/05/a-look-back-at-our-origins.html
LOOKING TOWARD THE FUTURE. Monday, May 18, 2015. A look back at our origins. We are the first human civilization to remove our envisioned "golden age" from an imagined-nostalgic past and instead plant that better-than-the-present era (tentatively) in a potential future. We can only achieve that great accomplishment if we learn as much as possible, about. Where we came from. Like how about a newly discovered missing link between prokaryotes and eukaryotes? In a new light. Galaxies and deadly rhythms!
CONTRARY BRIN: SF on the big screen...and TV
http://davidbrin.blogspot.com/2015/05/sf-on-big-screenand-tv.html
LOOKING TOWARD THE FUTURE. Friday, May 15, 2015. SF on the big screen.and TV. What is Science Fiction? Here’s my take on the Literature of Change. 8211; nicely edited into a vividly animated. So now Yahoo is creating original sic fi content? Is a comedy by Paul Feig …. another garbage scow headed into the galaxy? Does anyone get that. Wow, the SyFy Channel has really veered back into realstuff scifi! Here is the Childhood's End teaser. Based on the classic by Arthur C. Clarke. Keep your eye open for it.

http://laranth.livejournal.com/31292.html
Tasting at LavaCap - laranths scribblings. 02:56 pm December 23rd, 2013. Quick tasting at LavaCap. On 12/23. We planned on restocking our Zin from them. Zinfandel Reserve 2010 $24 - Good balance on tannins, big front end on second taste. Bought 4. Spring House Zinfandel 2010 $24 - More muted than Reserve. Not enough acid on front end. Prominent tannins. Rocky Draw Zinfandel $22 - Less big than reserve, better balance than Spring House. Still best Zin here. Bought 8. The Lair of Laranth the Listener.
For Real?: July 2014
http://unsatirical.blogspot.com/2014_07_01_archive.html
Saturday, July 12, 2014. My current To-Do list is the same as my previous To Do list, which isn't great, but I am at least making some progress. A quick run down:. Porting things over to Wordpress. Fiction as a controlled substance. But also, an idea occurred to me. I'm spending a little time each week talking about, reading and voting on stuff that happens at The Writers Arena. So go, read, vote. I've contributed once, and hope to do so again. And we'll see how I do. Posted by David Webb. Is the best th...
For Real?: March 2014

Writing Prompt 3: Fred Phelps has died. The Afterlife turns out to be a little different to what he imagined. Thursday, March 20, 2014. What follows is me being satirical:. Slowly, he closed his eyes. He counted to ten. He opened them again. Nope No harps, no halos, no hosannas. Quite a lot of pumping techno. Fred stared. His jaw began to wobble. Saint Peter slid his arm around the poor man's shoulders. I know," he said "but you'll get used to it. After all, this is your eternal reward.". The Brothers Pl...

Writer, reader, (ranter), editor and oh yeah, mom. More about Anna, first person. 25 — wait, no, 35 years later. June 11, 2014. This post was originally written for Yalewomen.org. I vividly remember reading Lisa Belkin’s 2003 article, The Opt-Out Revolution. My sons were 9, 13 and 16. F you’d ever told 20 year old feminist-me that I would be raising three sons and not working I would have laughed in your face. My answers, of course, are specific to our family, my heritage, my friends, and where I live.

Writer, reader, (ranter), editor and oh yeah, mom. More about Anna, first person. October 2, 2013. It’s only fitting that my first post be about learning the process of posting. My goal is to learn how to make this website exactly what I want it to be, which will probably be useful, but will undoubtedly also involve many hours. The thing is, I’ll enjoy those hours (at least when things work…). Filed Under: Meta Me. She raised three children, and now writes essays and fiction. By David Foster Wallace.

I think the color scheme still needs work, it's kinda depressing. And we need content, of course. But I'm really happy with our use of SSI to make page maintenace a snap. Like most geeks I start far more projects then I ever finish. Here's a short list of things I've played around with but will probably never complete:. DAACS - A auth...

LOOKING TOWARD THE FUTURE. Wednesday, March 21, 2018. Questioning assumptions, left and right. We lead off with a pair of recent books, one striving desperately to undermine our confidence, and the other trying just as hard to snap us out of our funk. Though as an appetizer… here’s p. Robably the most cogent observation about our current political climate. Decline of the Western Experiment =. 8221; that starts with the cleverly implied assumption that. 8221; and even “Das Kapital.”. 8221;) — is a c...
