Dr. David B. Whitlock: When the church bells stop ringing
http://davidbwhitlock.blogspot.com/2015/07/when-church-bells-stop-ringing.html
Thursday, July 16, 2015. When the church bells stop ringing. I couldn’t understand what my two-year-old grandson, Eli, was saying. We were at our church’s playground, and as I was pushing him on the swing, he was asking me something I couldn’t quite make out. Finally, I got it. 8220;They ring every 15 minutes,” I told him and immediately knew I was talking over his head. 8220;Don’t you like the way they sound? He nodded in agreement. 8220;I wanna see ‘em,” he said. 8220;Forgiveness is simply letting go o...

Dr. David B. Whitlock: The power of others’ prayers
http://davidbwhitlock.blogspot.com/2015/07/the-power-of-others-prayers.html
Thursday, July 9, 2015. The power of others’ prayers. At the close of a visit with friend who has spent more time in the hospital than either he or anyone anticipated, I asked him what I could do for him. Without a moment’s hesitation, he said as plainly as his physical condition would allow: “I want you to pray for me.”. He received my prayer as if it were a precious gift- -like a cup of cold water to a man who had gone days without drinking. Dr James O’Keefe, who reluctantly agreed to help fellow...

Dr. David B. Whitlock: The good in a bad resume
http://davidbwhitlock.blogspot.com/2015/07/the-good-in-bad-resume.html
Friday, July 31, 2015. The good in a bad resume. In the “What’s Trending” segment on The Today Show last Friday, July 24, Savannah Guthrie reported on an advertising executive who sent out two resumes. The first was your typical resume showing successes and accomplishments. Guess which resume got the most responses? The “bad one.”. When Guthrie referred to the second resume as the “bad one,” The Today Show’s host, Matt Lauer echoed, “the honest one.”. We fear the consequences of revealing the truth about...

Dr. David B. Whitlock: September 2014
http://davidbwhitlock.blogspot.com/2014_09_01_archive.html
Thursday, September 18, 2014. Uniting to help the environment. What with all the bad news these days- -from the Middle East (ISIS) to the NFL (domestic violence) - -it’s nice to hear some good news. This one comes from Mother Nature herself in cooperation with some people intent on helping her. It seems the ozone layer is getting better. That should certainly invigorate those heading to the upcoming United Nations Climate Summit next week. Such a meeting is urgent: The U.N. reported recently ...The UN...

Dr. David B. Whitlock: February 2015
http://davidbwhitlock.blogspot.com/2015_02_01_archive.html
Thursday, February 26, 2015. With each slash of the snow shovel, I freed up one more inch of space, making room for my garage door to open so I could determine if I could drive out. In less time than I thought it would take, (and more back pain than I anticipated) I was ready to put the car in reverse and attempt a test run down my driveway. “Yes,” I breathed a sigh of relief as I successfully made it to the street in front of my house, “freedom.”. And then I laughed out loud because my awkward steps rem...

Dr. David B. Whitlock: December 2014
http://davidbwhitlock.blogspot.com/2014_12_01_archive.html
Wednesday, December 24, 2014. Twas the night before Christmas. Twas the night before Christmas…. 8230;and nothing happened, at least not much out of the ordinary. No trumpets announced his birth. No one was forced to bow to the baby king. No words of allegiance to him and his kingdom were recited. I think Jesus intended it that way. It’s just like him. Intrude into people’s lives. It’s easy to miss God when he shows up in the flesh, smelling like a baby. But what about now, this Christmas? 8220;I donR...

Dr. David B. Whitlock: April 2015
http://davidbwhitlock.blogspot.com/2015_04_01_archive.html
Thursday, April 30, 2015. Somebody’s prayin’. 8220;Preacher,” a church member said to me one Sunday, “I was driving in front of the church this morning, and I saw you standing by yourself up there at the top of the front steps. I knew what you were doing; I knew you were praying. And I just want you to know it made me feel better.”. It somehow makes us feel better knowing somebody’s praying, though I can’t explain exactly why. 8220;Somebody’s prayin’. I can feel it. It felt good hearing Mom pray for me.

Dr. David B. Whitlock: November 2014
http://davidbwhitlock.blogspot.com/2014_11_01_archive.html
Wednesday, November 26, 2014. Come back for Thanksgiving. Do you know the story of Jesus’ encounter with the ten lepers? Because leprosy was contagious, people who had this potentially deadly disease were required to stay away from other people and to announce their presence if they had to come near. So, as Jesus entered a village one day, these ten lepers stood at a distance and cried out to Jesus to be merciful and heal them. But after he miraculously cured them, only one returned to give thanks. Then ...

Dr. David B. Whitlock: Loving-kindness
http://davidbwhitlock.blogspot.com/2015/07/loving-kindness.html
Thursday, July 2, 2015. The bumper sticker had only one word on it: “Loving-kindness.”. And as soon as I read it, I suspected Someone was trying to mess with my mind, for I was in no mood for such a one word aphorism as “loving-kindness,” my patience having been tested by the distracted waitress who forgot to turn in half of my lunch order. I was passing a plain, white, mid-size, economy car, when I saw the bumper sticker: “Loving-kindness.”. By then Lori had awakened. After a few minutes, or maybe s...
