DC - Techniques

Some of the oil paintings are painted on a light gesso ground and some on a mid/dark grey ground. I've tried to follow the principle of underpainted shadows showing through the upper coloured layers. In reality a lot of the overpainting is quite opaque with some wet-in-wet blending. The intention is to combine the old techniques of glazing with a more modern and lively direct painting method.

I must have got the art bug quite young and always took Art as a subject in school (in Cowbridge, Wales). Knowing I wanted to do something with an art content for a living, I went off to Leicester to do a degree in product design. I became fascinated by the way in which designers could render products, automobiles and backgrounds so convincingly using markers, pastels and gouache. I had picked up some useful techniques in college, work and other courses but I felt there was still so much to learn.

This series of commissioned paintings portray historical figures from the Tudor and Stuart periods. Some are close copies and others are a combination of different reference materials including engravings. As far as possible these portraits have been painted in the style of the periods, typically early 1500's to the early 1600's. All are oil on linen canvas (which has had a smooth application of gesso, similar to the wood panels of the 16th century). More on Page 2.

Marine (work in progress) Goblin Old. Inspiration exist, but it must find you working. My name is David Camarasa, and I was born in Spain on July 21st, 1973. I studied Fine Arts for 4 years. For 10 years or so after that, I devoted my time exclusively to painting, using techniques such as oil, watercolours and pastels. During this period of time, I also worked as a graphic designer for a printing company. I like making my sketches and storyboards with these methods first, and then I digitalize them.
