These handmade stoneware art tile works are framed in aluminum and designed to be wall-hung or as a table with sabre-style legs. Chart tiles are geographically accurate and can depict any location on the planet at any scale. The clay, mixed with beach sand to the consistency of cake icing, is spread into a large slab from which the tiles are cut. The organic tile shapes often create an underlying motion within the piece.

The Seafire Small World is a geographically accurate globe of the Earth made from curved stoneware tiles fired to 2200 f and fixed onto a polyurethane foam and hardwood base. In addition to latitude and longitude, the globe includes, in low relief, the major mountain ranges and river systems on land, and tradewinds, currents, and continental fracture zones of the world’s oceans. The Seafire globe is available in 22 and 30 inch diameters, and with a metal stand, is suitable in an outdoor setting.

I grew up on the shores of the Chesapeake Bay where I spent my days on the water discovering the constantly changing marine landscape. After graduating from the University of Maryland with a degree in geography, and a stint in the merchant marine, I began a career in building, maintaining, and captaining yachts. The course of my art is guided, in part, by the notion that the planet is a living entity, and my work is a small offering to the spirit that holds sway over life’s adventure.

MANDALA is a Sanskrit word for a circle. Considered by the Buddhists to be a geometric microcosm of the Universe from the human perspective and a meditative art form used for focusing attention and establishing a sacred space. In Tibet, mandalas have been developed into sandpainting as a meditation on impermanence. After days or weeks of creating the intricate pattern of a sand mandala, it is brushed together and placed in a body of running water to spread the blessings of the meditation.
