I'm a fifty something, early-retired, widowed father of four wonderfully adjusted, understanding children. A sometime published author and (still) aspiring poet, close friend of the late and very great Pauline Baynes (my one claim to a reflected sort of glory), dabbler in drawings, ex-powerlifter and, if you know me well enough to have been told, there's another aspect of me that, while I'm not ashamed, I don't share with everyone.no guessing.

I once had a wife with whom I had four wonderful children. Then Helen got sick and left us for a while - though her spirit carried on forever in the children - and, even now carries on in the grandchildren. There's my eldest, Emma, and her family - not too far away in Ireland but far enough to be missed every day. And soon to be even farther, starting a new life in New Zealand. Te amo - eldest. There's Lindsey and her partner - far, far away in Australia. Te amo too, middle child.

This is the text of the obituary I wrote for Pauline for the Guardian. It was (naturally) done very quickly and doesn't say half what I should have said . During the second world war, because of her art training, she made models for the Royal Engineers' camouflage unit (1940-42), then at Farnham Castle. She then moved to the Admiralty's hydrographics department in Bath (1942-45), drawing maps and nautical charts.
