Veni vidi vagari.: January 2008
http://wanderingrachel.blogspot.com/2008_01_01_archive.html
I came, I saw, I wandered. Wednesday, January 30, 2008. I have decided that doing just about anything official here in France feels like going to the DMV. Ie waiting in line. A lot. And general inefficiency in unimaginable quantities. I am sort of exaggerating but not really. This should not distract from the wonderful news that I now have my Carte de Sejour! Saturday, January 26, 2008. Besides having a mild cold, 2008 has been treating me pretty well so far. My family is coming to visit me in France!

Veni vidi vagari.: November 2007
http://wanderingrachel.blogspot.com/2007_11_01_archive.html
I came, I saw, I wandered. Friday, November 30, 2007. I thought I should update on teaching. When I'm teaching itself things are more or less good. What is super annoying is that my school is very disorganized and so I don't really know what students are in my classes, so there is still, months into teaching, confusion over this. (Less so than at the beginning but still ridiculous.) Its too frustrating and mundane to go into the details, so I'll leave it at that. For example, Tuesdays are my day from hel...

Veni vidi vagari.: June 2009
http://wanderingrachel.blogspot.com/2009_06_01_archive.html
I came, I saw, I wandered. Sunday, June 14, 2009. Congrats Angela and Ali! I went to my friends' wedding yesterday. They are expats; Angela is British and Ali is from Cote d'Ivoire/Burkina Faso. The wedding was a very simple, short ceremony at a city hall type place, followed by a short reception in a friend's nearby garden, and then a picnic on the beach. Friday, June 12, 2009. Photos of a different sort. I have some of my own critiques, but constructive criticism/feedback on these (or others) is welcome.

Veni vidi vagari.: March 2008
http://wanderingrachel.blogspot.com/2008_03_01_archive.html
I came, I saw, I wandered. Friday, March 7, 2008. How did it get to be March? I have no idea how it happened, but somehow its March. Tomorrow my parents and brother arrive, for two and one week visits (respectively). I'm really excited for their visit! I have rented them an apartment in Avignon for the week, after that my parents will travel a bit eastward. My friend Liz from the US is also coming out to visit, so we'll do some traveling with them but also of course do stuff on our own. The buses I went ...

Veni vidi vagari.: April 2009
http://wanderingrachel.blogspot.com/2009_04_01_archive.html
I came, I saw, I wandered. Wednesday, April 29, 2009. Vivat academia, vivant profesores. It is exactly a month since I landed in Dakar, and so perhaps it is fitting that I feel like I've been here forever, and also like I'm starting all over. So, much to my amusement, I'm now living ' on campus,' again, in some sort of half life in between student and professor, but really neither. Tuesday, April 21, 2009. Sure, but only if you marry me! Do you think I should give it to them all? Parental and parental fi...

Veni vidi vagari.: Ma ngi fi rek. (I am here, only.)
http://wanderingrachel.blogspot.com/2009/05/ma-ngi-fi-rek-i-am-here-only.html
I came, I saw, I wandered. Wednesday, May 27, 2009. Ma ngi fi rek. (I am here, only.). There is not any one thing that, in isolation, is hard or particularly negative about being here. But there is also nothing that makes it all fit together into a cohesive whole, and there are more than a few frustrations that are bigger and more systemic than anything I can change while here. I promise to put up some more photos, soon. Subscribe to: Post Comments (Atom). View my complete profile. So, hows your day job?

Veni vidi vagari.: February 2008
http://wanderingrachel.blogspot.com/2008_02_01_archive.html
I came, I saw, I wandered. Sunday, February 24, 2008. Next I headed to Izmir, to stay with a Turkish friend of mine and her family. I met Irem while we were both volunteers in Belgium at the refugee center. It was great to see my friend again, and to meet her family, who were all very kind and generous, despite the language barrier. Irem actually lives in a town right outside of Izmir. Yet, unlike an American suburb, it is very well served by public transit. Buses, minibuses, and shared taxis....Prett...

Veni vidi vagari.: December 2007
http://wanderingrachel.blogspot.com/2007_12_01_archive.html
I came, I saw, I wandered. Saturday, December 29, 2007. Portugal: Lisboa and Sintra. I am currently about as far west in Western Europe as you can get, in Lisbon, which is probably about 20 km or so from the Atlantic Ocean. (I think that Anglophones are the only people who call this darn place Lisbon, by the way, its known to the Portuguese and many others as Lisboa.). More later, but if I don't write before then, happy New Year everyone! Monday, December 24, 2007. Well, there is more to say but I´l...

Veni vidi vagari.: Misc Dakar thoughts
http://wanderingrachel.blogspot.com/2009/06/misc-dakar-thoughts.html
I came, I saw, I wandered. Wednesday, June 10, 2009. Some misc. thoughts I had earlier but never got around to posting). Everything happens outside or partially outside here. This is a combination of different ideas of public vs. private, the climate being amenable to outdoor activities (often preferable to the inside) and also lack of infrastructure for more permanent, indoor or just adequately large enough indoor structures. If you're wondering about the hand gestures, I have somewhat grasped a few, bu...
