Below is a transcription of the journal I kept while overseas. You Know You're In. Fiankoma When . . . Callyn complied a great list of observations by our group members. For the purpose of this website I selected some that I think outside readers will find funny, also. You know you are in Fiankoma when. 1 You party at a funeral. 2 You get excited about any approaching vehicle. 3 You jump in surprise at the sound of a cell phone. 4 Any time the high stays below 100F it was a nice day out. 5 You smell something and you’re like, Oooothat’s me. We would get up just after sunrise, hopefully woken up by the dawn and not the roosters, who start crowing more than an hour before sunrise. Typically bread, beans, eggs, and little hot dog things with tea, coffee, and juice. We form a circle with the masons, carpenters, home owners, etc. A reading, like a story or an inspirational passage, is read (then translated by Frimpong) and then everyone holds hands for a moment of silence (during which time you could pray or simply think about the day ahead).

One important part of this trip was the cultural immersion. We learned a number of things about Ghanaian culture. A few of the points I found most interesting are discussed below. People would speak for a bit, and then loud music was played. When the music came on groups would get up to dance, and at one point they insisted our group come up and dance too . . . what could we do? See Journal Entry for May 28th. For a little more info).
