Sunday, November 28, 2010. History of the 13th Major Port, part 1. During WWII the 13th Major Port was in charge of seaport operations. In England it oversaw the supply work in preparation of the Normandy invasion. In 1946 an official history was published for members of the unit. I have copied portions of this history below:. It sailed for England on 29...

Longshore Soldiers: Army Port Battalions in WWII: Praise for Longshore Soldiers
http://www.longshoresoldiers.com/p/praise-for-longshore-soldiers_19.html
Praise for Longshore Soldiers. Author of No Greater Ally. People often forget that it takes 10 men in the rear areas to support one infantryman on the front line. However, for the men of the port battalions, there were no front lines on June 6, 1944, and at times, they found themselves under heavy fire as well. This is an eloquent tribute to a beloved grandfather and an impeccably researched unit history." —Professor Peter Schrijvers,. Author of Liberators: The Allies and Belgian Society, 1944-1945.

Longshore Soldiers: Army Port Battalions in WWII: A Short History of the 494th Port Battalion in WWII
http://www.longshoresoldiers.com/2011/11/short-history-of-494th-port-battalion.html
Thursday, November 10, 2011. A Short History of the 494th Port Battalion in WWII. After speaking with veteran Dr. James Baker. I requested the 494th Port Battalion historic report from the National Archives. I got a roster of men in the battalion, which is unusual, and I got a five-page written history detailing the time in the UK. Frustratingly, it cuts off just before the Normandy invasion! The battalion crossed the Atlantic aboard the HMT Queen Elizabeth. You can read a fully detailed description in t...

Among my grandfather's photographs is a shot of an anti-aircraft gun in what looks like some kind of air show. I assumed this was Antwerp, because of the words on the sign in the background looked Dutch. Curious, I contacted Tracy Dungan, author of V-2: A Combat History of the First Ballistic Missile. Here is his response:. A RAF Horsa glider.

November 20, 2015. Thoughts on being a Good Test Software Engineer. I’ve lost count of how many projects I’ve worked on over the past 15 years – most have been good, some have been bad, then there’s the odd one that makes you truly want to turn your back on any kind of software development and go and apply for that oh so stress free looking shelf stacking job at Sainsbury’s! Or a plane in the air that works perfectly which somewhere in the chain you contributed to. It can be every bit as challenging, int...
