Debugging is a code smell | ps aux | grep thoughts

https://davidphenry.wordpress.com/2009/09/03/debugging-is-a-code-smell

Ps aux grep thoughts. Thoughts on software and life. Debugging is a code smell. Posted September 3, 2009. Production can be a real pain in the ass. This seems to get amplified if the software being run in production doesn’t do its job of telling you what’s wrong. Something I’ve noticed during my tenure at a software company I worked for, is that the product regularly required a developer to be involved in order to determine configuration issues. How do you combat such a horrible problem? Unit testing com...

Ps aux grep thoughts. Thoughts on software and life. WCF: Null Parameter on Service Call. Posted March 24, 2010. Was receiving a null parameter on a service call. After looking through KnownTypes, Asynchronous vs synchronous, etc. more a while, turns out:. The parameter on the asynchronous OperationContract was named request, whereas the parameter on the synchronous OperationContract was named command. Distributed WPF Application: Part 1 | ps aux | grep thoughts

Ps aux grep thoughts. Thoughts on software and life. Distributed WPF Application: Part 1. Posted February 26, 2010. So, in the spirit of a distributed WPF application, let’s focus on the User (shocking). The capital U in user is intentional. They are the all knowing (well, they know what they want to do…), the all powerful (well, they are paying the bills…) and the all something else (I needed a third) driver of the application. Unfortunately, this least technical aspect will likely affect the overall im...

Distributed WPF Application | ps aux | grep thoughts

https://davidphenry.wordpress.com/2010/02/10/distributed-wpf-application

Ps aux grep thoughts. Thoughts on software and life. Posted February 10, 2010. I’ve been going over some ideas (not my own ideas of course) that have been focused around distributed loose-coupled message driven systems, WPF XBAP portals, enterprise architecture, and domain driven design. I’m hoping to post the outline of the ideas as a means to aggregate the ideas in one place, which will hopefully help my and others understanding. Rigidity: The design is difficult to change. Ependency-Inversion (DI) Pri...

Gotcha: nHibernate NonUniqueObjectException | ps aux | grep thoughts

https://davidphenry.wordpress.com/2010/02/28/gotcha-nhibernate-nonuniqueobjectexception

Ps aux grep thoughts. Thoughts on software and life. Posted February 28, 2010. Quick note on a gotcha. Was getting the infamous NonUniqueObjectException: a different object with the same identifier value was already associated with the session from NHibernate. Typically, this error occurs when you are using objects across NHibernate ISession’s. In my case, I was using the same ISession but was still receiving the error when I added two New objects to a parent object’s collections. Enter your comment here.

Binding to Anonymous types in Silverlight | Reality Refactored

https://grahammurray.wordpress.com/2010/05/30/binding-to-anonymous-types-in-silverlight

Binding to Anonymous types in Silverlight. If you’ve ever tried to bind to anonymous type in Silverlight (or a WPF non full-trust XBAP) you will have wound up running into a pretty nasty gotcha. It seems like a natural enough thing to do, for example:. It seems like this should work, right? If you try it, though, you will see a whole lot of nothing and a bunch of MethodAccessExceptions in your output log. Why does this happen? This would not be so bad except for the fact that the Silverlight and WPF bind...

Microsoft removes beating heart from WHS, crushes it. | Reality Refactored

Microsoft removes beating heart from WHS, crushes it. Now I just feel left in the cold. Silverlight/WPF cross-compile gotcha | Reality Refactored

https://grahammurray.wordpress.com/2010/09/22/silverlightwpf-cross-compile-gotcha

Here’s an interesting gotcha if you are trying to cross-compile between Silverlight and WPF. The default content alignment of a ContentControl’s content in Silverlight is left/top while in WPF it’s stretch/stretch! The Silverlight ContentControl respects the VerticalContentAlignment/HorizontalContentAlignment properties (which default to left/top) while the WPF one does not. Check out the default templates of ContentControl in Silverlight and WPF for some other “cute” differences. From your own site.

Doing an unattended install of Windows 8 Pro on the HP MediaSmart Server (Ex470) | Reality Refactored

https://grahammurray.wordpress.com/2012/09/23/doing-an-unattended-install-of-windows-8-pro-on-the-hp-mediasmart-server-ex470

Doing an unattended install of Windows 8 Pro on the HP MediaSmart Server (Ex470). Recently I’ve wanted to experiment with whether Windows 8 would make a good home server (since there appears to be no future for WHS now, unfortunately). Rather than buy some nice NAS form factor hardware to test things out, I thought maybe I would try to get Windows 8 to install on my aging Ex470. Its also super cute hardware, so I wanted a reason to run it some more. It does not have a VGA hookup, so Remote Desktop MUST b...

Dynamically generating types to implement INotifyPropertyChanged | Reality Refactored

https://grahammurray.wordpress.com/2010/04/13/dynamically-generating-types-to-implement-inotifypropertychanged

Dynamically generating types to implement INotifyPropertyChanged. As I mentioned in my last post. So much in Silverlight/WPF (especially when using MVVM) requires INotifyPropertyChanged. To do it pretty neatly, or other similar tools. But, what I’m interested in, is if you want some simple code to implement this that stands alone and doesn’t have any external dependencies on 3rd party libraries, what would that look like? And how complicated is that? The basic concept is that we will dynamically generate...
