David Raven is a native Iowan who has been painting and exhibiting for over 50 years. Starting as an abstract expressionist in the 1960’s, he has evolved toward more representational imagery. With the exception of some brief departures, David continues to paint landscapes and still life exclusively in oil. More recently, he has moved in the direction of surrealism influenced significantly by artists like Rene Magritte, the very inventive Belgian painter. Waterloo Municipal Gallery, Waterloo, IA 1967.

An ongoing series of paintings that focus on Midwestern small town images and sensibilities. Included are many images from the artists’ neighborhood of Como Park, Minnesota, and, his hometown in North Central Iowa. Subjects include quiet country roads and small town gas stations or buildings where water towers are omnipresent. A limited extension of urban landscapes that will likely be continued. Each painting presents a landscape image that is both traditionally and abstractly rendered. The effect is akin to holding up a magnifying glass to a landscape, and revealing both a hard edge and soft edge simultaneously (in the same painting).
